    Abstract: Process and apparatus for spinning polymer filaments permits the obtaining of skin-core filament structure by feeding a polymer composition to a spinnerette at a flow rate sufficient to obtain a spinning speed of about 10 to 200 meters per minute through the spinnerette; heating the polymer composition at a location at or adjacent to the spinnerette so as to heat the polymer composition to a sufficient temperature to obtain a skin-core filament structure upon quenching in an oxidative atmosphere; extruding the heated polymer composition through the spinnerette at a spinning speed of about 10 to 200 meters per minute to form molten filaments; and quenching the molten filaments in an oxidative atmosphere so as to effect oxidative chain scission degradation of at least a surface of the molten filaments to obtain filaments having a skin-core structure.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus heats a thin sheet of material prior to subjecting the sheet to a process for forming the sheet into a desired shape, such as by vacuum forming. The sheet is supported in a generally horizontal manner during transport through the apparatus, for example on a pair of conveyor chains or belts which carry and provide support to the longitudinal edges of the sheet by gripping same. The sheet is heated from above and below by heating elements and a diffuser plate is located between the upper and lower heating elements, and beneath the downwardly facing side of the sheet. The diffuser plate permits air flow therethrough from an air source and forms a film of heated air adjacent the downwardly facing side of the sheet to support the sheet and prevent excessive downward sagging thereof during heating thereof.

    Abstract: A shaping mold for the production of ultra-thin shaped rubber articles, has a main body which is dipped into a latex liquid so as to make the latex adhered to the surface of the main body. The adhered latex is heat-dried to form an ultra-thin shaped rubber article over the surface. The mold is such that at least the surface of its main body is made of an amorphous carbon and that its bottom part is fitted with electrifying electrodes and has therebetween a heating area to be heated by resistance heating due to its electrification. The same shaping mold from its dipping step through the inspecting step of inspecting the shaped article as adhered to the surface of the mold. In the heat-drying step of the method, the shaped article as adhered to the surface of the shaping mold is heated and dried from the inside of the mold with preventing as much as possible formation of pin holes in the shaped article.

The support members include an arrangement for selectively interlocking the support members with each other to form a series of symbols into a preselected legend for producing the raised lettering.

    Abstract: An improved spin head for a melt spinning machine is capable of being readily disassembled. The spin head is provided with a tubular sleeve member which defines an elongate open ended interior cavity oriented along the melt spinning axis and a core insert member removably received within this interior cavity. A spinneret is removably coupled to an end of the core insert member and a pump is fluid connected via polymer passageways defined in the insert member between a molten polymer supply apparatus (e.g., a screw extruder) and the spinneret. Heating elements (which, in the preferred embodiment, are integral with the sleeve member) maintain the various structural components at elevated temperatures so that, during operation, the polymer is likewise maintained at elevated temperatures sufficient to maintain it in a molten state.

    Abstract: Pastilles are formed by passing small quantities of a viscous material through small openings and onto a moving conveyor surface located therebeneath. The viscous material is contacted by the conveyor surface after the material protrudes from the openings, but before the material becomes sufficiently large to break free and fall. Instead, the conveyor surface forcefully extracts the material from the openings, thereby resulting in the formation of pastilles which are of smaller size than would have been the case had the material been allowed to break free and fall on its own accord.

    Abstract: Apparatus for molding a thermoplastic tubular product such as a bushing having an internally threaded major diameter portion and an integral truncated minor diameter portion. The molded bushing has an internal undercut in the form of a thread in the major diameter portion thereof. The mold core is made as a core pin and an externally threaded sleeve of greater diameter than the core pin circumferentially of a portion of the core pin. Provision is made for moving the mold elements relatively to define the mold cavity and to effectively release the core by axial compression of the molded product while exposed on the mold core to cause it to swell radially outwardly and release the externally threaded core which forms the internal thread on the molded bushing.
