Extrusion Or Injection Molding Patents (Class 425/DIG243)
  • Patent number: 4945807
Abstract: A manifolded, multiple-pin die apparatus and method processes potentially explosive material to form longitudinally perforated cylindrical pellets for use as gun propellants. A main entrance passage formed in mating manifold blocks gradually changes in cross-sectional configuration from circular to figure-eight, and then branches in a gently curved manner. The divergent branches formed then further branch in the same manner and feed circular cross-section passages leading to extruding dies wherein a series of die pins extend axially through a discharge passage. Each die comprises a central core member supporting an outer shell via radial ribs which are configured to form flow passages of hour-glass configuration. No change of flow direction in the entire apparatus exceeds fifteen degrees.

  • Patent number: 4834914
Abstract: Dry, compactable radioactive waste material having a low specific activity and comprised approximately of eighty-five percent plastic material and fifteen percent non-plastic material is shredded and granulated. The granulated material is supplied under heat and pressure to an extruder which will extrude the waste material in plasticized form into a drum for disposal. Radioactive ion exchange resin beads may also be dewatered and mixed in predetermined amounts with the dry granulated material for encapsulation within the plasticized waste for disposal. The plasticized waste material, with or without the resin, is horizontally extruded into a horizontally disposed drum between a compacting disk secured to the extruder barrel and the bottom of the drum. Controlled pressure is applied against the bottom of the drum whereby the plasticized material will completely fill the space between the disk and the bottom of the drum and gradually push the drum bottom away from the sik as the drum is filled.

  • Patent number: 4767577
Abstract: A process and apparatus for producing plastic-bound propellant powders and explosives in crystalline form, with the apparatus including an extruder comprising a casing with a feed opening, optionally a solvent supply opening and one or two extruder shafts with kneading and conveying segments. For processing the plastic binders, which polymerize photochemically or under X-rays, a casing section transparent for the rays is provided, with polymerization within the extruder being initiated by UV/VIS or X-radiation sources arranged around it and the radiation intensity and/or the wavelength of the radiation are controlled as a function of the pressure difference over a given path in a compression zone of the extruder, in such a manner that the propellant or explosive strand or strands leave the extruder in a dimensionally stable and cuttable manner.

  • Patent number: 4698000
Abstract: A continuous co-extruded food product is formed having dissimilar inner and outer portions wherein the inner portion is enveloped by the outer portion and the outer portion is a dough containing particulate material such as chocolate chips. The product is formed by an inner extrusion port being recessed a distance d from an outer extrusion port with the distance d being sufficient for permitting particulate material in the outer dough portion to pass through an exit passage between the inner and outer extrusion ports without clogging or agglomeration. Turbulence is induced in the outer dough portion which envelops the inner portion thereby causing the particulate material to tumble whereby at least a portion of the particulate material partially penetrates the exterior surface of the outer dough portion enveloping the inner portion. Dough is removed from the surface of the part of the particulate material penetrating the exterior surface of the outer dough portion.

  • Patent number: 4661290
Abstract: An apparatus for compacting a solid waste material includes a hollow cylindrical body having a charging inlet for charging the solid waste material therethrough into the hollow cylindrical body, a heating portion for heating the solid waste material in the hollow cylindrical body, and a discharging outlet for discharging the solid waste material from the hollow cylindrical body; a rotatable shaft disposed in the hollow cylindrical body and having a helical screw blade thereon, the screw blade and an inner wall surface of the hollow cylindrical body being spaced from each other with a clearance provided therebetween for allowing the solid waste material in the hollow cylindrical body to form a bridge therein; a support for radially movably supporting an end of the rotatable shaft; a prime mover coupled to the end of the rotatable shaft through the support; and an outlet nozzle coupled to the discharging outlet for compressing the solid waste material discharged from the discharging outlet.

  • Patent number: 4565512
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a ram extruder including an extruder barrel having an extrusion die at one end and a hydraulic ram at the other end having a piston which is advanced along the barrel by the ram to displace material in the barrel through the extrusion die. To facilitate loading of the barrel a loading port is provided in the side of the barrel adjacent said other end of the barrel through which the barrel may be charged after retraction of the piston following an extrusion operation and a port closure device is provided to close the port after extrusion and evacuate air from the barrel prior to advancing the piston past the port to minimize the air contained in the barrel prior to the extrusion operation.
