  • Patent number: 6544586
Abstract: A gas sensor element includes a solid electrolyte layer having a plurality of projections formed on its outer surface, an inner electrode formed on the inner surface of the solid electrolyte layer, an outer electrode formed on the outer surface of the solid electrolyte layer, an outer electrode formed on the outer surface of the solid electrolyte layer and a spinel protection layer formed on the outer electrode for protection. The projections are formed on the outer surface of the solid electrolyte layer such that they are formed in a single layer; an area occupied by the projections accounts for 10% to 85% of the outer surface of the solid electrolyte layer and the distance between the neighboring projections is 5 &mgr;m to 300 &mgr;m. Thus, the outer electrode is formed on the solid electrolyte layer in such a manner as to penetrate into pits formed between neighboring projections and is thus strongly bonded to the solid electrolyte layer, thereby improving thermal durability.

Abstract: In a coating method for direct or indirect application of a coating medium onto a moving surface, the amount of coating medium dispensed by an applicator device within a given time period and the actuating force that is exerted on the metering element, in order to achieve a coating layer of a desired coating weight, are altered independently of each other. In a relaxation operation mode, the amount of coating medium applied within a given time period is reduced when the coating weight exceeds a desired value; when the coating weight falls below the desired value, the actuating force exerted on the metering element is reduced. In a contact pressure based operating mode, the amount of coating medium applied within a given time period is reduced when the coating weight exceeds a desired value; when the coating weight falls below the desired value the actuating force exerted on the metering element is increased.

Abstract: A multilayer material for sliding elements with a metallic backing layer and a plastics overlay applied thereto achieves good adhesion to the substrate without the disadvantages of known PVDF-based bearing materials. The plastics overlay comprises a PVDF content of 60-95 vol. %, the remainder consisting of PTFE or PTFE and at least one further component with a density of <7 g/cm3. The content of this further component may amount to a maximum of 5 vol. %. The other components comprise fully or partially aromatic polymers such as PI, PAE, polyamides, PPS, PES, PEEK, PSU or polyester, carbon variants such as graphite, carbon black, C fibers or coke, as well as MoS2, BN or CaF2 or CaCo3. The production method consists in scattering a powder mixture of these components onto the metallic backing material and then heating it to above the softening point of the PVDF component to form the plastics overlay, the plastics overlay thereafter being rolled smooth.

Abstract: In a coating method, a precoating layer is applied to one surface of a web W laid between a plurality of web guide rollers GR while a leading end surface of an extrusion-type head portion EX is pressed against the one surface of the web. Accordingly, entrained air increasing as the transferring speed of the web becomes higher could be prevented from entering a coating point on a doctor edge surface near an outlet of a slot by the meniscus of coating liquid formed in a slight gap between the front edge surface of the extrusion-type head portion and the one surface of the web approaching there. As a result, the precoating layer having an excessive amount can be applied stably without turbulence at the coating point caused by the entrained air. A roller coating process is described in which the material is applied to a roller under which the leather material passes whilst compressed. Alternatively, the micro-capsules may be applied to the leather by drumming-in in a wet process.

  • Patent number: 6245383
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a prepreg in which a reinforcing substrate is impregnated with a thermosetting matrix resin. In the method, the reinforcing substrate is moved in a traveling direction. The thermosetting matrix resin is supplied to an outer circumferential surface of a transferring roller. The thermosetting matrix resin which substantially contains no solvent and which is in a molten state is transferred from the outer circumferential surface of the transferring roller to a first surface of a reinforcing substrate while the reinforcing substrate moves. The thermosetting matrix resin which is transferred to the first surface is forced to permeate through the reinforcing substrate by pressing at least one pressing roller on the thermosetting matrix resin transferred to the first surface while the reinforcing substrate moves. The reinforcing substrate impregnated with the thermosetting matrix resin is heated to semi-cure the thermosetting matrix resin.

Abstract: This invention relates to an economical coating composition for porous substrates that provides extremely glossy surfaces, is capable of supporting holographic images, provides good oxygen barrier properties as well as good oil, grease, solvent and water resistance. Said coatings on paper substrates are printable, biodegradable, recyclable, and repulpable. They are also suitable for use in conjunction with food products. This invention also relates to a process for applying said coatings onto porous substrates as well as a process for the economical production of inexpensive holographic images on substrates such as paper and cardboard containers.

  • Patent number: 6187377
Abstract: A strippable paint is poured down onto coated surfaces 1, 2 and 3 of an automobile V within regions to be protected, from a plurality of nozzles 10 disposed in parallel in a widthwise direction of the automobile V above the coated surfaces 1, 2 and 3 of the automobile V, while controlling the number of nozzles which are used to discharge the strippable paint, in accordance with the extent of the regions to be protected. Thereafter, the strippable paint is spread over an entirety of the coated surfaces 1, 2 and 3 in the regions to be protected. Thus, the region covered by each of the nozzles can be relatively reduced to efficiently carry out the pouring-down of the strippable paint and to prevent dusts of a coating material from being scattered to a wide range. In addition, the need for a masking step and/or an inspecting/correcting step can be eliminated to reduce the operating steps and further to alleviate the operational load.

  • Patent number: 6180172
Abstract: A process and apparatus for edge coating a substrate is provided. A process provides a layer of a formable coating material on a transfer belt which layer of formable material has a variable thickness over the width of the layer, applying a layer of the formable coating material on the transfer belt to the edge surface to produce a coated edge surface and smoothing the coated edge surface by contact with a smoothing belt. The coating on the edge surface is sufficiently thick to cover and smooth irregularities in the edge surface of the substrate. The coated edge surface can be further treated by the usual methods for coating edge surfaces of flat substrates. The apparatus comprises the roller or nozzle to provide the layer of formable material of variable thickness on the transfer belt, the transfer belt carries the coating material to the edge surface and the transfer belt can act as a smoothing belt to provide an edge surface with the coating material with all of the irregularities obscured.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing dual-zone lubricated magnetic disks. An absorbent medium is held against a selected portion of the surface of a lubricated disk. The disk is rotated in relation to the absorbent medium, and the absorbent medium removes mobile lubricant from the selected portion of the disk, leaving bonded lubricant in addition to a selected amount of mobile lubricant. In an specific embodiment, an absorbent tape is supplied to a roller that holds the tape against a surface of the disk, and solvent is applied to the tape and/or disk to facilitate the removal of mobile lubricant. Differential lubricant thicknesses are thus obtained.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the thermomechanical surface treatment of flat webs of material, particularly those made of paper and carton, and to agents for performing said process. According to the process of the invention, adhesion between the flat web of material and the surface of the tool used in thermomechanical surface treatment, e.g., a roll or a press, is reduced or prevented by using an abhesive agent, which contains dicarboxylic dialkyl esters and/or diisoalkyl esters of C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 dicarboxylic acids with C.sub.1 -C.sub.13 n- and/or iso-alkanols as component with abhesive effect. The abhesive agent is preferably employed as an oil-in-water emulsion and is either applied to the surface of the tool used in said thermomechanical treatment or is added to the impregnating fluid or the paper coating mass or the moistening water or the steam in pre-moistening, or is applied to the paper web after the impregnating unit or directly before the smoothing roll.
