  • Patent number: 6436465
Abstract: A magnetic paint is extrusion coated to a length of splice jointed webs through a coating head by continuously feeding the length of webs across the head. When a splice joint passes across the head, the head is moved apart from the web before passage and contacted with the web after passage. Objectionable coating portions which are formed as a result of moving the head out of and into contact with the web are scraped off by a scraping roll downstream of the head.

Abstract: An infrared inspection system and an induction heating system used in conjunction enable the inspection of rubber coated rolls, such as rolls used in the pulp and paper industry. The system effects non-destructive inspections of rubber coated rolls to detect a debonded condition between the metal core and rubber coating. The method includes supporting a roll for inspection, evenly heating or cooling the roll, and observing a thermal transient of the roll generated by the evenly heating process. Using an infrared camera, observed areas that are not transferring heat uniformly with respect to neighboring areas are suspected debonded areas.

  • Patent number: 6274001
Abstract: A calendering method which enhances the smoothness of surface sized paper/paperboard by a combination of temperature and moisture gradient calendering processes without the fiber sticking/picking problems that affect runnability and without using waterboxes. The moisture gradient calendering is performed so that the cross direction moisture profile can be corrected and high smoothness levels can be obtained. Heated calender rolls form a hot pressure nip having a temperature greater than the temperature of the moisturized web. Lubricant is applied to both sides of the web to prevent fiber sticking/picking in the hot nip. The lubricant may be applied by the size press, by the moisturizing showers or by separate lubricant showers. The smoothness developed by moisturizing and hot nip calendering is substantially irreversible.

Abstract: The present invention concerns a process and a coating color for coating a cellulosic web. According to the process an aqueous coating color is applied on the surface of the web. The invention comprises using a coating color which contains an aqueous polymer whose viscosity in an aqueous solution increases when the temperature rises. Preferably, methylcellulose or a corresponding polymer having a gelling temperature of about 5 to 10 .degree. C. more than the application tempature of the coating color is used. The temperature of the coating is increased after the application of the coating color in order to achieve gelling of the polymer. As a result, the coating color rapidly solidifies which decreases the amount of mixture being recycled and it reduces mist-formation in the film press method and improves coverage of coating applied by conventional blade coating.

Abstract: Casting paper of a desired surface texture or finish for use in the manufacture of artificial leather is produced by heating the polymer coating 1 of a polymer-coated paper 2 to a temperature sufficient to melt the polymer and then cooling the polymer coating from its molten state to a solid state as it passes through a nip between an embossing roll 3 having a surface configuration corresponding to said desired surface texture or finish and a backing roll 4, thereby to impart the surface configuration of the embossing roll to the polymer-coated paper. The polymer is preferably polyolefinic, for example poly (4-methyl-1-pentene) or a polypropylene/polyethylene blend. An anti-curl back-coat, for example of polyvinyl alcohol, can be applied after the embossing operation.

  • Patent number: 5789031
Abstract: A process for manufacturing a coated paper for use in printing is characterized in that the coated paper for printing is produced by coating a color consisting mainly of pigment and a water-soluble binder made of starch or starch derivatives to the surface of a base paper, then drying and finishing it. Steam or an aqueous penetrant solution having a penetrating force of less than 50 seconds is sprayed or applied over the dry coated layer surface of the coated paper, prior to it being finished with a calender, for redistributing the water-soluble binder in the coated layer in order to correct its uneven distribution, which is the cause of printing mottle during the offset printing operation.

  • Patent number: 5609686
Abstract: An apparatus continuously smoothes a wet coating of magnetizable particles and binder on a moving flexible web. A first longitudinal end of a flexible film is held in contact with the wet coating on the substrate and is free to drag against the wet coating. The first longitudinal end is deflected toward the substrate along a line extending transversely between the first and second transverse ends. The amount of deflection is adjusted and varied during coating to adjust the radius of curvature of the deflection of the first longitudinal end. A smoothing bar or a cylindrical rod, with or without a sharp edge, can hold the flexible film in position. The deflection and adjustment can be performed by a screw. Alternatively, a cylindrical rod is used by itself.

  • Patent number: 5571564
Abstract: An offset printing apparatus has a fluid-cooled nip roll which, in use, is placed in intimate contact with a hot, rapidly moving, endless printed and dried paper web so as to improve the cooling efficiency of the first downstream chill roll, permit the use of fewer chill rolls, and avoid condensate streaking. The apparatus takes the form of a nip roll specially designed to press the web into intimate contact with the first downstream chill roll while avoiding damage to the web, nip roll, or chill roll, and while avoiding ink picking by the web surface contacted by the nip roll. Employing the nip roll in the system also permits the use of a substantially shorter dryer and fewer chill rolls as compared to a conventional system operating at the same web speed. The coolant circuit for the nip roll includes a warmup loop which temporarily circulates warm fluid through the nip roll when the system is first taken off-line, thereby preventing condensate formation or frost formation on the nip roll.

  • Patent number: 5567473
Abstract: The invention provides photographic paper having increased image stability. The invention is generally accomplished by forming a paper sheet, drying said paper in a first stage to below about 10 percent water, then applying a polyvinyl alcohol solution to both sides of said paper sheet, drying said paper in a second stage to below about 5 percent water, and then applying further polyvinyl alcohol solution to said paper and drying in a third stage. The paper then may be coated to form a silver halide photosensitive color paper. The paper contains between about 4 and about 6 weight percent of polyvinyl alcohol that is concentrated near the surface of said paper. Further, the paper has a oxygen leak rate of less than about 25 cc/m.sup.2 /day and an oxygen GTR rate of less than about 1 cc/m.sup.2 /day.

  • Patent number: 5549928
Abstract: A process for making an absorbent structure having a capillary substrate and regions of osmotic absorbent on the capillary substrate. The osmotic absorbent is cured from a liquid precursor applied to the capillary substrate. The capillary substrate has regions of topographically different elevations, taken normal to the plane of the capillary substrate. The capillary substrate is passed through a gap between a transfer roll and an anvil roll in a printing apparatus. The transfer roll has at liquid precursor on its periphery. The liquid precursor is applied to only the topographically elevated regions of the capillary substrate which contact the periphery of the transfer roll. By changing the topography of the capillary substrate, the liquid precursor can be applied to the capillary substrate in different pattern, without changing the transfer roll.

  • Patent number: 5520958
Abstract: A system and method are provided for applying a desired protective finish to a web of printed label stock. The web of printed label stock is moved through a coating station, where a layer of hot melt varnish is extruded onto the web of printed label stock. Then, the web of printed label stock is transferred to a working station in an environment which causes the layer of varnish to at least partially solidify to a predetermined state as it reaches the working station. At the working station, the layer of varnish is worked to a desired finish. Preferably the web is carried through a nip formed by a pair of rolls, including a highly polished chrome roll which contacts the layer of varnish and works the layer of varnish to a glossy finish. After the layer of varnish is worked to a glossy finish, the web is directed through a finishing station, where the glossy finish is fixed in the layer of varnish, and the web is conditioned to a state in which it can be processed as a web of finished label stock.
