Patent number: 6436485Abstract: The invention relates to a method of applying a powder coating to a substrate (5), in particular a temperature-sensitive substrate such as wood, wood-fiber material, plastic, rubber, cloth, paper or cardboard, wherein a thermoreactive powder is applied as a base layer (6) to the uncoated surface of the substrate (5), and wherein by means of infrared radiation with at least some components in the near and/or short-wave infrared region the powder is warmed throughout to the cross-linking temperature and cured, or is warmed throughout to the gelling temperature and in a subsequent processing step cross-linking is completed and the coating is cured. To generate the infrared radiation in particular halogen bulbs (7) are used in combination with a reflector (8) to reflect the emitted radiation towards the substrate. The halogen bulbs (7) are operated in such a way that the emitted radiation has a flux-density maximum in the near infrared.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 2000Date of Patent: August 20, 2002Assignee: Advanced PhotonicsInventor: Martin Sedlmeyr

Publication number: 20020100566Abstract: Paper comprised of suitable amounts of a hydroxy-phenoxyether polymer is effective to provide that paper with an increase in sizing or strength. Such paper may be prepared by intermixing dispersions or solutions of hydroxy-phenoxyether polymer with the pulp slurry or web during papermaking, or by application to formed paper. Paper may be coated or laminated by applying such dispersions or solutions.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 20, 2000Publication date: August 1, 2002Inventors: Robert A. Patent number: 6413590Abstract: Provided is a UV-curable ink jet coating comprised of a copolymer or mixture of polyvinyl alcohol and polyethylene oxide, and a water-soluble polymer which can act as an electron and/or proton donor, preferably containing at least one carbonyl group. The entire mixture is UV cured once coated onto a substrate thereby creating a matrix due to crosslinking between the water soluble polymer and the polyvinyl alcohol/polyethylene oxide copolymer or mixture. The result is an ink receptive coating which will absorb many different ink jet inks very rapidly, while exhibiting high gloss. The ink jet medium thereby permits use with many different printers and inks.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2000Date of Patent: July 2, 2002Assignee: Rexam Graphics Inc.Inventors: Brian L. Patent number: 6403154Abstract: Sheet products, such as card stock, envelopes and other paper products (10) are advanced on a vacuum surface conveyor belt (30) beneath a glue applicator drum (35). The glue transfer strips (37 and 38) of the glue applicator drum apply stripes of glue (42 and 43) at the ends of the sheet product, leaving a belt engaging space (41) without glue between the glue stripes. The sheet product is grasped by overlying conveyor belts (46 and 47) at the belt engaging space (41), thereby exposing the wet glue stripes on opposite sides of the belts. Hot air is applied on opposite sides of the conveyor belts (46 and 47), drying the glue. The glue transfer strips (37 and 38) of the glue applicator drum can be adjusted in size, shape and position so as to apply glue to one end, the other end, or both ends of the sheet product, and if glue is applied to only one end, one of the dryers (50 or 51) can be deactivated, saving energy.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2001Date of Patent: June 11, 2002Inventor: H.
