  • Patent number: 5635270
Abstract: A woven fabric is formed from polypropylene fibers by simply weaving the fabric using polypropylene fibers in both the warp and weft directions. The edges are left frayed and could become unraveled. In order to prevent the fabric from fraying further, particularly during washing, binding fibers are incorporated at least in the weft direction, but only along the edges. The binding fibers are polyester fibers coated with a low-melting-point thermoplastic adhesive. The thermoplastic adhesive is one that melts at a temperature lower than the melting point of the polypropylene fibers. Once these are incorporated into the fabric at the loom, the fabric is placed in an oven and heated to a temperature above the melting point of the thermoplastic adhesive and below the melting point of the polypropylene fibers to cause the thermoplastic adhesive to melt, binding the polypropylene fibers together.

  • Patent number: 5415916
Abstract: The improved ruffling tape includes a heat fusible, flexible, resilient, elongated strip of thermoplastic or the like, to one side of which is a pull string loosely secured thereto, as by spaced stitches along the length of the strip, which stitches run over the string and into the strip. The strip can include the heat fusible material, if desired, only on the side opposite that bearing the string. The string has one end thereof anchored thereto, as by a knot which does not pass through the stitches. The The string may have a slip covering of silicone or the like. In accordance with the method, the strip is heat fused to one side of a fabric, with the string and stitches exposed. The fabric is then ruffled by pulling the free end of the string, with or without simultaneously pushing said fabric toward the tied end of the string. When the desired ruffling is obtained, the free end of the string is tied off against the adjacent end of the tape to hold the ruffling in place.

  • Patent number: 5389421
Abstract: A Wilton-type carpet and methods of making integral fringes on it, of affixing a decorative border around the periphery of the carpet and of inlaying decorative strands within the design of the carpet. The method creates integral fringes by the one way looming of the face yarns and by the severance of two transverse backing strands. The backing is undone while simultaneously releasing face yarns to act as the fringes. The method also provides a shelf at the fringe/carpet face interface allowing for a decorative trim to be affixed thereto. Another aspect of the method entails the complete removal of face yarns at both left and right sides to result in a shelf along the left and right sides to which decorative trim can be affixed. The face yarns within the carpet face can be removed in both the longitudinal and transverse directions to inlay decorative yarn therein.

  • Patent number: 4929484
Abstract: Filling material for percolating filters for the treatment of liquid and process for producing and assembling the material. Especially in biological sewage treatment, filling material must provide the best possible hold for the biological filter film necessary for the purpose and must have uniform wettability. The disadvantage of known apparatuses meeting these requirements is that they either tend to clog or are difficult to produce. The new filling material will work effectively and reliably, while being simple to produce and assemble. To provide ideal growth surfaces for the biological filter film, the filling material has a plurality of plastic strips (20) which are connected to one another by means of a single holding sheet (21). Furthermore, the strips (20) have a special shape, in particular corrugated edges and/or a structured neutral region. The filling material is especially suitable for biological treatment, particularly the denitrification of sewage or drinking water.
