  • Publication number: 20110097538
Abstract: An article may include an array of features formed in a substrate and may be coated by a thermal barrier coating (TBC). The array of features may mitigate thermal stress experienced by the coated article. In particular, the array of features may reduce or limit crack propagation at or above the interface of a thermally insulative layer and a bond coat in the TBC. In some embodiments, the array may be formed proximate to and substantially aligned with cooling holes formed in the substrate. In other embodiments, an article may include a first array of features formed in a first location of a substrate and a second array of features formed in a second location of a substrate. The first and second locations may be determined or selected based on a prediction of thermal stresses that the substrate will experience at the first and second locations during use.

  • Patent number: 7931952
Abstract: A water-retainable molding is formed by mixing and hardening cement, fiber bundles and fiber masses, and includes first pores inside the fiber bundles, second pores between fiber bundles and a cement gel, third pores inside the fiber masses, fourth pores between the adjacent fiber masses, and fifth pores due to discharge of water content and air inside a platelike block. The first, second and fifth pores are employed as a capillary portion, the third pores are employed as a water-retaining portion, and the fourth pores are employed as a water communicating opening portion. When water is supplied to the surface, the water is absorbed from the fourth pores as well as the first, second and fifth pores, and is retained in the third pores. Furthermore, when the temperature rises, the water content is supplied from the third pores to the surface through the first, second and fifth pores so as to be evaporated and to control the temperature of the molding.

Abstract: A method for preparing ordered mesoporous silicon carbide (OMSiC) nanocomposites uses an evaporation-induced self-assembly of a precursor composition that preferably includes a phenolic resin, pre-hydrolyzed tetraethyl orthosilicate, a surfactant, and butanol. The precursor mixture is dried, cross-linked and heated to form ordered mesoporous silicon carbide material having discrete domains of ordered, mesoscale pores.

Abstract: An improved, impact energy dissipating foam pad and method for creating a foam pad that includes plurality of uniform pegs and holes in a closed cell foam substrate. A foam substrate plank is placed between two compression molds that includes a plurality of perpendicularly aligned pegs formed thereon. The compression mold's pins have sufficient length and are offset so that when the two compression molds are pressed together, the tips of the pegs on one compression mold penetrate the area located between two pins on the opposite compression mold. The compression molds are then pressed into the heated substrate plank. The two compression molds are then removed and the compressed substrate plank is allowed to cool causing the closed voids to be ‘set’. After cooling, the compressed substrate plank is then cut transversely along a line parallel to the plank's top and bottom surfaces and perpendicular to the closed voids.

  • Patent number: 7651757
Abstract: The invention is directed to a floor underlayment material comprising a film sheet having an inner surface attached to a foam sheet and an outer surface including a plurality of recesses formed therein. The plurality of recesses define one or more fluid pathways through which a fluid may migrate across the outer surface of the film layer. The underlayment material may be used in a flooring system to help prevent or limit the accumulation of a fluid between the floor and the subfloor. In one embodiment, the underlayment material may be disposed between a subfloor and floor with the outer surface of the film layer being disposed adjacent to the underside of the floor. The one or more fluid pathways provide channels through which a fluid such as moisture vapor may escape from within a flooring system and thereby reduce the accumulation of moisture in the flooring system.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for a composite structural material. A non-solid composite section that is filled with a structural foam that reduces the weight of the composite structural material. A solid composite section that is coupled to the non-solid composite section. The solid composite section is an area for structural attachment for the composite structural material. A region adjoining the non-solid composite section to the composite section is radiused to reduce stress when the structural foam is bonded to the region. The radius in the region prevents delamination and cracking of the structural foam when a load is placed on the composite structural material.

Abstract: A mesostructured film is provided having a structure in which surfactant molecular assemblies are regularly arranged three-dimensionally. A polymer compound thin film is formed on the substrate surface through spin coating or the like, and a rotating roller wrapped with a cloth is pressed against the polymer film for rubbing in one direction. The polymer material includes polyimide, polyamide, and polystyrene. The substrate includes a silica glass substrate and a silicon substrate. The mesostructured film can be formed by retaining the substrate in an aqueous solution containing a surfactant, silicon alkoxide, and acid. After being retained in the solution, the substrate is heated at about 60 to 120° C. for several hours to several days for reaction. The surfactant includes C18H37(OCH2CH2)20OH and C16H33 (OCH2CH2)20OH. The alkoxide included tetraethoxysilane, tetramethoxysilane, and tetrapropoxysilane. Hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, or sulfuric acid is used as a catalyst.
