  • Patent number: 6835437
Abstract: A series of interconnected packing chip precursors that can be formed and transported economically to a packager as a flat sheet and then expanded at the site where they will be used into individual packing chips by folding and separation from the other chips. Preferably, the precursors are formed on a chipboard sheet by forming fold lines and lines of separation and by adding securing means, such as bonding media or connecting features to secure the sides of the expanded packing chip in its final shape. The fold lines and lines of separation can be configured to form jagged or serrated edges on the expand-on-site packing chip, and the chip may also include apertures; the jagged and serrated edges and the apertures cooperating with each other and other aspects of adjacent chips to interlock the chips when they are placed around an item in a package for shipment.

  • Publication number: 20040234428
Abstract: An object of the present invention is to provide a manufacturing method by which alumina-silica based fibers excellent in mechanical strength can be readily and securely obtained, and the present invention obtains precursor fibers as a material by using an alumina-silica based fiber spinning stock solution for use in an inorganic salt method. Next, the precursor fibers are heated under an environment which makes it difficult to carry out an oxidizing reaction on the carbon component contained in the precursor fibers. Thus, the precursor fibers are sintered to obtain alumina-silica based fibers.

  • Publication number: 20040137817
Abstract: Improvements in preventing heat- and moisture-shrink problems in specific polypropylene tape fibers are provided. Such fibers are basically manufactured through the initial production of polypropylene films or tubes which are then slit into very thin, though flat (and having very high cross sectional aspect ratios) tape fibers thereafter. Such fibers (and thus the initial films and/or tubes) require the presence of certain compounds that quickly and effectively provide rigidity to the target polypropylene tape fiber after heat-setting. Generally, these compounds include any structure that nucleates polymer crystals within the target polypropylene after exposure to sufficient heat to melt the initial pelletized polymer and upon allowing such a melt to cool. The compounds must nucleate polymer crystals at a higher temperature than the target polypropylene without the nucleating agent during cooling.

Abstract: The specification discloses a material with a surface nanometer functional structure and the method of manufacturing the same. Using the properties of supercritical fluids, a nanometer structure is formed on the surface of a substrate, resulting in a material with a surface nanometer functional structure. The supercritical fluid carries the precursor of functional materials. Once they reach a reaction balance with the substrate in a high-pressure container, the pressure is released at an appropriate speed. The carbon dioxide supercritical fluid undergoes a vaporization reaction, distributing and adhering the precursors on the substrate to form the surface nanometer functional structure. Utilizing the VLS nanowire growth method, one-dimensional and two-dimensional compound nanometer functional wire structure can be produced.

Abstract: A hollow thermoplastic synthetic polymer filament carpet yarn includes a core portion having N number (typically, three or four) lobes joined thereto. Stiffening ribs are formed in the core portion. The stiffening ribs cooperate to define at least N hollow regions in the core portion. The hollow regions may communicate or be isolated from each other. Each lobe has at least one transverse-stiffening web therein that prevents the lobe lateral edges from being deformed towards the exterior of the filament. The major portion of each lateral edge of each lobe may be substantially linear or convexly curved over substantially its entire length. A spinneret plate for producing the filament is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6656585
Abstract: A thread has a thread body formed of a continuous and monolithic synthetic resin material. The thread body defines chambers serially disposed along a length of the thread body and separated from one another by partitions. A gas, which may be lighter than air, fills the chambers. An embodiment has the chambers as radially adjacent chambers dispose along two to four radially adjacent longitudinal sectors of the thread body. The partitions of the two to four sectors are disposed either at common longitudinal locations or offset locations. The thread may be used as a fishing line that floats or in survival equipment wherein buoyancy is enhance. Still further, the thread provides for enhanced thermal insulation when used to weave a cloth.

  • Patent number: 6645618
Abstract: The present invention relates to aliphatic polyester microfibers, films having a microfibrillated surface, and methods of making the same. Microfibers of the invention can be prepared by imparting fluid energy, typically in the form of high-pressure water jets, to a highly oriented, highly crystalline, aliphatic polyester film to liberate microfibers therefrom. Microfibrillated films of the invention find use as tape backings, filters for particulate contaminants, such as face masks and water or air filters, fibrous mats, such as those used for removal of oil from water and those used as wipes, and thermal and acoustical insulation. Microfibers of the invention, when removed from the film matrix may be used in the preparation of woven or nonwoven articles and used as wipes for the removal of debris or dust from a surface. The microfibers and microfibrillated articles of the invention may be biodegradable, rendering them useful for geotextiles.

  • Patent number: 6630231
Abstract: A composite formed of a polymer matrix phase having a reinforcement phase including polymeric microfibers. The microfibers are preferably formed of a highly oriented polymer, having a high modulus value and a large surface area. The large surface area can serve to tightly bind the microfibers to the polymer matrix phase. The microfibers can be provided as a fully- or partially-microfibrillated film, as a non-woven web of entangled microfibers, or as a pulp having free fibers. The microfibers can be embedded in, or impregnated with, a polymer or polymer precursor. Some composite articles are formed from thermoset resins cured about a highly oriented polypropylene microfiber reinforcement phase, providing a strong, tough, moisture resistant article. One composite includes a matrix and reinforcement formed of the same material type and having substantially equal refractive indices, allowing the composite to be optically clear.
