    Abstract: An absorbent pad has a cover formed of non-woven fibrous material, which is coated with a fluorocarbon polymer and odor absorber(s). The cover sheet is apertured around a critical zone to overcome undesired surface tension effects. The method of producing the cover includes providing a water-based mixture that includes 1% by weight of a fluorocarbon composition. An odor absorbing reagent is added to the mixture which then is applied to a nonwoven web of fibrous material. The treated web is dried to remove the excess water from the mixture, and the fluorocarbon composition component is cured to form a hydrophobic coating around the reagent and to bind the reagent to the web. The drying and curing steps can be accomplished by applying a flow of air heated to a temperature in a range from about 100.degree. C. to about 120.degree. C. to the web until the water has been removed.

    Abstract: A sign is made by a pultrusion process by printing separate sign panels and attaching them to a fibrous component of the sign to make a longitudinally continuous sign panel subassembly which is beneath the surface of the sign. The sign panels are spaced apart in the subassembly by about the length of the sign and are fixed to the fibrous component prior to being pulled through a forming die. In the forming die, the subassembly is formed together with rovings, scrim resin and any other components of the sign into the cross-section of the sign. The sign panel subassembly saturates with the resin so that it blends in with the rest of the sign except for identification matter printed on it and is permeable to allow gases to escape as the resin cures in the die. The sign takes on its desired cross-sectional shape in the die and is cut off at its desired length after it exits the die. The sign panel may be on either side of the subassembly, and the subassembly may be beneath a surface layer.

    Abstract: A wave dampening batt for use inside a waterbed mattress is made by intimately mixing a multiplicity of short, non-woven fibers of a first type and a multiplicity of short, non-woven thermal bonding fibers. Raising the temperature of the mixture of fibers above the melting point of the thermal bonding fibers yet below the melting point of the fibers of the first type and then lowering the temperature below that melting point causes the thermal bonding fibers to join the fibers of the first type together throughout the wave dampening batt. A waterbed mattress having a batt made in accordance with this method is also disclosed. The fibers of the first type may be solid or hollow with closed ends, the hollow fibers with closed ends providing buoyancy for the batt. The fibers of the first type may also be lobed or unlobed, the lobed fibers having improved resiliency so that the batt recovers more of its thickiness after compression than a batt made of unlobed fibers of comparable size and denier.

    Abstract: A sign is made by a pultrusion process by printing separate sign panels and attaching them to a fibrous component of the sign to make a longitudinally continuous sign panel subassembly which is beneath the surface of the sign. The sign panels are spaced apart in the subassembly by about the length of the sign and are fixed to the fibrous component prior to being pulled through a forming die. In the forming die, the subassembly is formed together with rovings, scrim resin and any other components of the sign into the cross-section of the sign. The sign panel subassembly saturates with the resin so that it blends in with the rest of the sign except for identification matter printed on it and is permeable to allow gases to escape as the resin cures in the die. The sign takes on its desired cross-sectional shape in the die and is cut off at its desired length after it exits the die. The sign panel may be on either side of the subassembly, and the subassembly may be beneath a surface layer.

    Abstract: A web or structure is formed by feeding separate supplies of fibrous material into contact with two separate lickerins that are parallel to each other and rotated toward each other. The fibers from the two lickerins pass through a mixing zone and are accumulated on a moving conveying screen that is moved parallel to the axes of the lickerins. Segmented baffle plates may be inserted into the mixing zone to control the lateral or cross-sectional composition of a web formed by the fibers accumulated on the screen. A segmented feed may be used to advantageously deliver different fiber materials at different rates to each lickerin. Radially layered composite web structures having circular cross-sections may be formed with the same apparatus by forming the conveying screen into a U-shape and selectively controlling the air flow through the screen.

    Abstract: An absorbent structure for collecting and retaining exuded fluids from food products such as meat and poultry is disclosed herein. The structure has a fluid permeable top sheet and a fluid impermeable bottom sheet with an absorbent core of pulp coform material located therebetween. In a preferred embodiment the periphery of the top and bottom sheets are sealed to form a pouch and the pulp coform material is stratified into a first top layer and a second bottom layer. Superabsorbents such as carboxymethylcellulose may be added to the coform material to aid in fluid retention. In the preferred embodiment the superabsorbent is located in the bottom layer of pulp coform while the top layer of the pulp coform is substantially devoid of the superabsorbent.

    Abstract: An evaporative cooler pad has opposing faces and is formed from a substantially noncompressible batt of substantially uniformly distributed natural cellulosic lightweight elongate segments such as aspen wood shavings. The segments are oriented in generally horizontal planes and extend in various directions with respect to each other to form interconnecting interstices and passageways throughout the pad. A preformed hydrophilic foam directly coats substantially all the surfaces of the individual segments. The coating is substantially less than the thickness of the segments so as to increase the cross-section of the segments without interconnecting the segments to each other and without bridging between the segments so that the interstices and passageways throughout the batt remain substantially intact. The foam has a minute cellular structure so that when contacted by water, the foam serves to wick the water along the surfaces of the pad and significantly increase the evaporative efficiency of the pad.

    Abstract: A method for encasing a fiberglass mat between a pair of plastic sheets. The fiberglass mat is disposed in a vacuum chamber in which a first sheet is mounted above the mat to form one wall of the chamber. The sheet is heated until it becomes adhesive. A vacuum is applied beneath the sheet to draw it into intimate contact with the mat. The sheet is cooled and trimmed and the mat turned upside down. A second plastic sheet is suspended adjacent the mat and heated until it becomes adhesive. A vacuum is applied beneath the second sheet so that it is drawn toward the first sheet, compressing the fiberglass mat to reduce its thickness. The two sheets are heat sealed around the mat so that it is encased in a compressed condition between the two sheets.
