If the loaded or resting voltage of one or more contiguous series elements uniformly drop from the previously known condition by an amount consistent with an over-current condition, an over-current internal short circuit fault is registered. The desired response is to prevent the affected series elements from heating to a hazardous temperature by summoning the maximum heat rejection capability of the system until the short ceases and the affected elements cool, the cooling function is no longer able to operate due to low voltage, or the affected series string has drained all of its energy through the short. Also includes are responses that allow the battery pack to continue to power the cooling system even though it may enter an over-discharged state.

  • Patent number: 8808895
Abstract: A battery may have a foil battery pack with leads that are coupled to a printed circuit board. Battery protection structures formed from an insulating material such as plastic may be used to protect the foil battery pack. The foil battery pack may have a rectangular shape with front and rear faces surrounded by a rectangular peripheral edge. The battery protection structures may have a ring shape that surrounds the peripheral edge while leaving the front and rear faces exposed to minimize the size of the battery protection structures. An elastomeric material may be used to form the battery protection structures. The elastomeric material may allow the battery protection structures to stretch when the battery pack expands during use. Two shots of plastic may be incorporated into the battery protection structures to provide both puncture resistance and the ability to stretch during use.

Abstract: A secondary battery module comprises a casing in which vents are formed so as to allow outside air to flow in a vertical direction and one or more partition walls partition an internal space of the casing into a plurality of cell chambers. The partition wall comprises the pipe member as communication path to communicate between the cell chambers and the outside of the casing so as to allow outside air to be introduced into the internal space of the cell chambers. The secondary battery module further comprises a plurality of rod-shaped battery cells housed in the cell chambers and beams to support the battery cells along a horizontal direction and at predetermined intervals in the vertical direction in the cell chambers such that a cell axis direction is perpendicular to the vertical direction and extends along the partition wall.

  • Patent number: 8790812
Abstract: A battery pack has multiple wall-shaped projecting portions, which are provided on side surfaces of battery cells perpendicular to a layer direction X, extend in a flow direction of cooling fluid and arranged in a direction perpendicular to the flow direction of the cooling fluid, to form fluid passages between neighboring battery cells. It further has multiple enlarged projecting portions, which are provided at intermediate portions of the wall-shaped projecting portions extending in the flow direction of the cooling fluid and brought into contact with the neighboring battery cells to receive action force therefrom. An outer dimension of the enlarged projecting portions in the direction, in which the multiple wall-shaped projecting portions are arranged, is made larger than a thickness dimension of the wall-shaped projecting portions.

  • Patent number: 8790810
Abstract: A battery cell module includes a battery cell, a sliding repeating element, and a guide rail. The repeating element is disposed adjacent the battery cell. A gap is defined between the battery cell and the repeating element. The repeating element has a main body with at least one spacer coupled thereto. The guide rail cooperates with the at least one spacer and permits the repeating element to move with an expansion of the battery cell. The cooperation of the guide rail with the at least one spacer thereby militates against an overcompression of the battery cell.
