The annular step is advantageously located at about right angle to the cell's longitudinal axis. The surface step is integral with the end cap and preferably located at about the same level as the shoulder of the cell housing at the end of the cell containing the end cap. The end cap assembly as a whole provides a tight seal for the cell.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1997Date of Patent: October 5, 1999Assignee: Duracell Inc.Inventors: Robert A. Patent number: 5930023Abstract: Printed electrochemical display cells are arranged in layer form with two electrode layers and an electrolyte layer occupying distinct areas of a substrate. An electrolyte layer overlaps most of one electrode layer but contacts a smaller portion of the other electrode layer, which is made of a thin film. When activated, an electrochemical reaction progressively increases the area occupied by the electrolyte layer and progressively decreases the area occupied by the thin-film electrode layer. The thin-film electrode layer recedes at a boundary in common with the electrolyte layer and provides an irreversible indication of change at a rate governed by the electrochemical reaction.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 1998Date of Patent: July 27, 1999Assignee: Wisconsin Label CorporationInventors: Chauncey T. Patent number: 5925479Abstract: A light transparent moisture barrier useful for preventing moisture from destroying the effectiveness of a moisture sensitive cell condition tester on an electrochemical cell, comprises a plurality of very thin layers of amorphous silicon nitride and a hydrophobic fluorocarbon polymer on a flexible, polymeric substrate. The layers are formed on the substrate by a deposition process such as sputtering. The thickness of any individual layer is less than one micron.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1996Date of Patent: July 20, 1999Assignee: Duracell, Inc.Inventors: Guang Wei, Jack Treger, Bryan Christopher Lagos

Patent number: 5916705Abstract: An apparatus for testing the electrochemical performance of discrete areas of a cathode that is to be used in a fuel cell is presented. The apparatus tests a cathode which is retained and carried by a holding fixture wherein a chamber is formed between an underside of the cathode and the holding fixture to allow for passage of an oxidizing agent therethrough and wherein the holding fixture also provides for retention of electrolyte on the top side of the cathode. A probe, which is connected to the cathode, has an anode material that contacts the electrolyte but is spaced apart from the cathode. Placement of the anode in the electrolyte generates electrical power detected by a measuring device connected between the probe and the cathode. The probe provides a sealing surface to allow for testing of just discrete areas of the cathode to determine if there are any flaws in the manufacture of the cathode.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1997Date of Patent: June 29, 1999Assignee: Lockhead Martin Tactical Defense Systems, Inc.Inventors: Dennis L. Patent number: 5912092Abstract: A battery package including a battery having at least one flat mount face defined therein, an electric circuit device for controlling discharging and charging of the battery, and a generally plate-like protective member mounted on the battery so as to cover the electric circuit device. The electric circuit device is made up of a plurality of circuit component parts and is mounted on the flat mount face with the circuit component parts held in tight contact with the flat mount face. The protective member includes an oblong plate member and side flanges protruding transversely from opposite side edges of the plate member to define a cavity. In an assembled condition with the protective member fitted to the battery, the electric component parts are accommodated within the cavity.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1997Date of Patent: June 15, 1999Assignee: Hitachi Maxell, Ltd.Inventors: Hiroshi Maruyama, Eiji Matsumasa, Hideaki Ebihara

Patent number: 5869952Abstract: Apparatus indicates a charge on a battery that has a predetermined operating range. The apparatus includes a thermochromatic material for displaying the charge level of the battery, and a resistive heating device, which is in thermal contact with the thermochromatic material, for generating heat for activating the thermochromatic material. A controlling device which is connected to the resistive heating device is also included for controlling the heat generated by the heating device so that the thermochromatic material has sufficient resolution to indicate the charge on the battery over a substantial portion of the thermochromatic material.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1997Date of Patent: February 9, 1999Assignee: Wahl Clipper CorporationInventors: Curtis William Fisher, Einar Trygstad

Patent number: 5867028Abstract: The battery tester of the present invention includes a heating element for generating heat in response to current supplied from a battery, and an indicator provided in proximity to the heating element for providing a visual indication of the remaining capacity of the battery in response to the heat generated by the heating element. The heating element has a display portion and first and second connecting portions on either side of the display portion that are selectively coupled to opposite terminals of the battery. The connecting portions of the heating elements have a lower resistivity than the display portion thereby reducing the heat generated at the switch contacts that are pressed by the user to activate the tester.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 1997Date of Patent: February 2, 1999Assignee: Eveready Battery Company, Inc.Inventor: John C.
