  • Patent number: 7906191
Abstract: Construction and advantages of improved wavy composite structures made from wavy composite, unidirectional composites, and damping materials is revealed. By combining wavy composite laminae in various waveforms, offsets, angular orientations and material combinations, it is possible to provide axial, torsion, or shear properties equivalent to unidirectional materials but without the limitations related to fiber discontinuity, labor costs for fabrication, and weakness at seams where laminates overlap. By combining wavy composite layers with unidirectional crossplies, or by using woven mats with various fill fiber levels where the warp fibers are sinuously arranged, improved strength and damping is possible. Several examples of both wavy crossply laminates and unidirectional crossply laminates are analyzed and compared.

  • Patent number: 7043868
Abstract: A fishing rod is strengthened with a metal reinforcement chosen from a metal coating deposited on a formed rod section and a metal wire in a substantially non-crossing arrangement, or a combination of these. In a base section of the rod, wire is wrapped in a single spiral direction so that the wire substantially does not cross itself. In a tip section, wire is arranged to follow the elongated section in a long spiral or substantially linear path, again not substantially crossing itself. The absence of crossing wires allows improved sensitivity and casting accuracy in the rod and eliminates the potential for crossing wires to separate when the rod flexes.

Abstract: A two-piece bonded fishing rod blank or fishing rod is formed from two filament-wound tubes, or from one filament-wound tube and another tube fabricated by a different process. In the latter case, the tube may be fabricated from sheet-wrap material. In that case, blanks are constructed from two tapered composite tubes and the components are joined together, preferably bonded by applying a thin layer of epoxy to the larger end of the tip section and inserting the tip section, tip first, into the larger end of the butt section. The outer taper of the larger end of the tip section can then be pulled tight against the inside taper of the smaller end of the butt section and allowed to cure. This results in a singular unitized fishing rod blank that exhibits improved hoop strength, increased flexural design parameters, increased sensitivity, and cosmetically appealing surface striations, which are unique and aesthetically pleasing.
