    Abstract: The present invention is a photographic element including a substrate with a polyolefin resin layer, which is preferably polypropylene, on each surface of the said substrate. The photographic paper includes a print or backmark retaining and spliceable antistatic layer having a dry coverage of from 10 mg/m.sup.2 to 10,000 mg/m.sup.2 on one of the free surfaces of the polyolefin layers. An imaging layer may be superimposed on the other free surface of the polyolefin layers. The antistatic layer includes a (i) conductive agent, preferably a combination of an alkali metal salt and a polymerized alkylene oxide, (ii) a positively charged colloidal oxide sol and (iii) a film forming binder which is an interpolymer of a primary amine addition salt with a peel strength of 200 g or above on the polyolefin surface on which the antistatic layer of the present invention is to be formed. The antistatic layer is expected to provide surface electrical resistivity of less than 12 log .OMEGA.

The total solids in the coating composition is less than or equal to about 10 weight %, and the weight ratio of the binder to the complex is at least about 1:1. Under these formulation conditions, the polyaniline protonic counter-ion complex is solubilized, rather than being in dispersed form, and is readily applied to form a thin, relatively transparent, electrically conductive film. Antistatic layers of photographic elements can be prepared in this manner.

    Abstract: A photographic film that is especially useful as a motion picture print film is comprised of a support having, in order, on one side thereof an antihalation undercoat and at least one silver halide emulsion layer and having, in order, on the opposite side thereof an antistatic layer and a protective topcoat; wherein the protective topcoat is comprised of a polyurethane binder and a lubricant and the polyurethane binder has a tensile elongation to break of at least 50% and a Young's modulus measured at 2% elongation of at least 50000 lb/in.sup.2. The polyurethane binder provides a tough but flexible protective topcoat that is capable of resisting abrasion and scratching when the film is conveyed through a projector and capable of standing up to the repeated use to which motion picture print films are typically subjected.

When applied to the surface of a support as a component of a coating mixture, the monomer polymerizes and entraps the polyelectrolyte molecules forming a distinct and permanent antistatic layer on the support. The electrically conductive polyelectrolyte molecules confer antistatic protection for photographic materials.
