Abstract: Adhesion of a hydrophilic photographic emulsion to a hydrophobic polyester substrate is achieved by providing the substrate with a surface layer containing free carboxy groups and incorporating in the emulsion a cross-linking agent which can cross-link the emulsion and the carboxy containing surface layer. Carbodiimides are a class of cross-linking agents having this capability.
Abstract: A method for modifying the surface properties of polymer substrates which is expedient and effective to give printability, adhesiveness and other desirable properties to the surfaces of polymer substrates is set forth. The method comprises the steps of: subjecting the surfaces to electric discharge treatment, then applying a photopolymerizable composition to the surfaces and irradiating the layer of photopolymerizable composition on the substrate surfaces with actinic rays, thereby photo-grafting the radically polymerizable compound contained in the photopolymerizable composition to the surfaces of the polymer substrates.
Abstract: The properties of a dichromated hydrophilic colloid photosensitive composition are improved by the incorporation of certain copolymer latices. More particularly, the copolymer particles in the latex conform to the structure:--A).sub. (B --.phi.-awherein A is a polymerized monomer or monomers having the structure: ##STR1## and B is a polymerized monomer or monomers having the structure: ##STR2## wherein each R.sup.1 is independently hydrogen or methyl;R.sup.2 is phenyl, substituted phenyl or a straight- or branched-chain alkoxycarbonyl group of about 2-8 carbon atoms;R.sup.3 is --NR.sup.4 R.sup.5 or --OR.sup.6 wherein R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are independently selected from hydrogen, alkyl of about 1-8 carbon atoms including substituted alkyl, and alkyl containing hetero atoms in the alkyl chain, and R.sup.6 is hydroxyalkyl of about 1-8 carbon atoms; anda represents a weight percent of about 75-95.
Abstract: Light-sensitive photographic films are produced by coating polyester films with aqueous dispersions of polyesters or copolyesters containing free-functional acid groups. Corona discharge treatment of the polyester or copolyester layers is disclosed for direct adhesion to photographic emulsions or indirect adhesion via a polymeric sub and/or gelatin sub.
Abstract: To improve adhesion of a hydrophilic photographic emulsion to a hydrophobic polyester film base the latter is pretreated by electrical discharge, flame or chemical treatment, and then given a sub-coating composed of an aqueous dispersion of gelatin, a water-soluble polyester, and a polyfunctional aziridine crosslinking agent, and this coating is then thermally cured.
Abstract: A method of undercoating a polyester film of a light sensitive photographic material is disclosed in which one side of the film is pretreated such that the contact angle with water is below 58.degree.. Additionally, a layer of an aqueous dispersion containing no organic solvent is applied to said side of said film, said dispersion containing a copolymer containing up to 60% by weight of glycidyl methacrylate and 25-60% by weight of ethyl acrylate.
Abstract: A photographic material comprising a support having on the surface a polypropylene resin component and a hydrophilic colloidal layer on the top surface which are firmly adhered together, is produced by subjecting the support having on the surface a polypropylene resin component to corona discharge, applying thereto a subbing layer comprising (a) at least one water-dispersed polymer latex selected from butadiene-acrylic ester copolymers, polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene, (b) a compound having an ethyleneimino group such as that capable of hardening a colloidal gelatin or casein, and (c) a water-soluble polymer, and providing a hydrophilic protective colloidal layer on said subbing layer.
Abstract: A method for surface treating a support for a photographic light-sensitive material, said support having a polyolefinic surface, which comprises flame treating said surface using a flame supported by a combustion gas consisting of a paraffinic or an olefinic hydrocarbon gas and oxygen gas, said combustion gas having the composition within the area ABCDE of FIG. 2, is disclosed.
