The light sensitive material is improved in the reciprocity law failure property and the sensitivity fluctuation due to variation of atmosphere humidity.

After the emulsion is formed, the pH of the emulsion is lowered to inactivate xanthinoid grain growth modifier, and the inactivated xanthinoid is replaced on the tabular grain surfaces by adsorption of a photographically useful compound chosen to contain at least one divalent sulfur atom, thereby concurrently morphologically stabilizing the tabular grains and enhancing their photographic utility.

According to the present invention, the photographic layer contains a heterocyclic compound. The heterocyclic compound is, for example, represented by the following formula [I]: ##STR1## in which n is 1, 2 or 3; and each of Ra and Rb independently is an acyl group, a sulfonyl group, a sulfinyl group, an alkoxycarbonyl group, an aryloxycarbonyl group, a phosphoryl group, a sulfamoyl group or a carbamoyl group. The other heterocyclic compounds represented by the formulas [II], [III], [IV], [V], and [VI] are also disclosed.
