Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide a switch for use with an appliance valve, such as for gas appliances. The switch may comprise a base for coupling the switch to a valve, a rotatable hub in communication with the base and providing rotation therewith, a first protrusion projecting outwardly from the hub, and a detent disposed on the base and in communication with the first protrusion for resisting rotatable motion of the hub. Rotation of the hub in a first direction for turning an appliance valve to an on position requires the first protrusion to flexibly deflect the detent to permit the hub to rotate past the detent. As a result, danger of inadvertent rotation of the switch is reduced.

  • Patent number: 5498154
Abstract: An ignition device for burners in which an ignition spark is established over a nonconducting surface between a hot electrode and a grounded electrode or electrically conductor portion which enables a greater spark distance to be obtained as compared to an ignition spark which jumps across an air gap between two conducting electrodes. An additional feature of the present invention is the provision of a high limit control positioned proximal the burner such that flame resulting from heater inlet blockage will flash upstream into the vicinity of the high limit control to control operation of the burner.

  • Patent number: 5310336
Abstract: A cigarrette gas lighter is disclosed which enables a selection between a substantially clear flame (burning gas) which is windshielded or presents an increased resistance to the wind effect and a red natural flame which can be visually easily recognized, wherein the selection is facilitated. A cylinder member (3, 30) has an air inlet port (30a) at its lower end while a mixing tube (8) is formed with an air suction port (8b) in its lateral surface. A flame switching tube (7) surrounds the outer periphery of the mixing tube (8), and when it is located at its first position, the flame switching tube (7) closes the air suction port (8b) while an open/close member (7g) leaves the air inlet opening (30a) open. When the flame switching tube (7) is driven to its second position, the flame switching tube (7) opens the air suction port (8b) while the open/close member (7g) closes the air inlet opening (30a).

  • Patent number: 5308240
Abstract: A flame lighter has a blue flame burner and a luminous flame burner supplied with gaseous fuel from a reservoir through separate valves, and a single ignition mechanism. A first operation ignites the blue flame burner and a second operation opens the valve for the luminous flame burner so that the luminous flame is ignited from the heat of the blue flame burner, whenever a luminous flame is desired.

  • Patent number: 4714426
Abstract: An ignition system for oil burner capable of positively accomplishing ignition without operating a combustion cylinder construction and keeping ignition performance for a long period of time. The ignition system is constructed in a manner such that an ignition heater is operated at a level below the combustion cylinder construction and a closing door is actuated in synchronism with the ignition heater so that an ignition window may be opened only when the ignition heater is approached to a wick for ignition.

  • Patent number: 4487570
Abstract: A gas burning lighter with electrical spark ignition has a closed casing (11). Successive downward operative movements applied to an actuator slide (15) first releases a pivotal element (23) which moves outwards to an open position, creating a flame aperture (33) and opening a burner valve, and secondly operates a piezoelectric ignition mechanism to cause discharge of a spark and ignition of the gas to produce a flame (35).

  • Patent number: 4176903
Abstract: A plug in igniter unit for an igniter system for a fuel burning apparatus having at least one electrical receptacle, the plug in igniter unit being provided with a housing having an electrical igniter therein and at least one terminal member electrically interconnected to the electrical igniter and projecting from the housing so as to be adapted to be received in the receptacle for electrical interconnection thereto. The terminal member has opposed ends respectively being operatively interconnected to the igniter and being adapted to be plugged in the receptacle and being twisted between the opposed ends thereof to define a twisted section thereof. The housing has a body portion provided with a chamber passing therethrough and receiving the twisted section whereby the opposed ends of the terminal member extend outwardly from the body portion in opposite directions. A potting compound is disposed in the chamber to secure the twisted section of the terminal member to the body portion.

  • Patent number: 4089636
Abstract: The present invention provides a battery ignitable lighter comprising a casing and a cap which is pivotally mounted on the casing. A fuel tank is arranged within the casing to maintain gas therein, and a nozzle is connected to the fuel tank. A cap controlling means is movable in accordance with the pivotable movement of the cap for controlling the opening and closing movement of the cap and the nozzle. A spark gap is provided along with an ignition circuit means for generating sparks across the spark gap. An insulative housing is arranged within the casing to enclose the ignition circuit means therein. A switch means is electrically connected to the ignition circuit. The switch means is positioned in the path of the cap controlling means such that the switch is moved into its operable state for energizing the ignition circuit by the movement of the cap controlling means in response to the opening of the cap. A cell is connected through the switch means to the ignition circuit.

  • Patent number: 4039274
Abstract: An electric safety lighter is provided which requires the preliminary step of immersing a normally dry wick into a reservoir of lighter fluid before a flame can be produced. This additional step precludes inadvertent operation of the lighter by a child and thus performs a valuable safety function. In addition, by maintaining the wick normally removed from the reservoir, lighter fluid evaporation is minimized.
