Abstract: Disclosed is a bar lighter comprising a novel safety mechanism for securing the bar lighter from being accidentally actuated. A safety lever (4) is pivotally connected to an actuating element (2) which can be moved relative to a housing between a starting position and an actuating position. Said safety lever (4) is preloaded so as to be pressed into a locking position in which the safety lever (4) engages with a locking element (15) that cannot be moved relative to the housing, thus preventing the actuating element (2) from moving from the starting position into the actuating position. A releasing mechanism (3) is provided which presses the safety lever (4) into a releasing position when being actuated so as to release the actuating element (2).

Abstract: A device for creating an electrical potential, such as a piezoelectric igniter, is connected to a conductor that conducts current to a burn tube to create a spark that ignites the fuel in the burn tube. The safety mechanism disables the operative connection between the trigger and the igniter such that the safety mechanism does not lock the trigger (the trigger may move relative to the torch body) but the movement of the trigger does not actuate the igniter. An actuating button is provided such that the user manually controls the position of the disabling mechanism.

  • Patent number: 7744368
Abstract: The present invention relates to a lighter which a user actuates by at least two different modes of operation. In the first mode, a plunger member is positioned to allow a biasing member to oppose movement of an actuating assembly so that a user releases fuel and ignites the lighter only if a high-actuation-force is applied to the actuator. In this first mode, the lighter resists operation by unintended users by requiring a user to have a predetermined level of strength to actuate the lighter. In the second mode, the plunger member is moved to a different position so that the biasing member does not oppose movement of the actuating assembly to the same extent as the first mode so that a user may release fuel and ignite the lighter if a low-actuation-force is applied to the actuator. Moving the plunger member from the first position to the second position preferably requires the user to have a predetermined level of cognitive abilities and/or physical characteristics in order to resist use by unintended users.

Abstract: Disclosed is an actuator for a piezoelectric cigarette or utility lighter with a LED penlight incorporated as an independent light source. The actuator is located at the top of a standard piezoelectric lighter behind the lighter's burner. The actuator activates the lighter when it is depressed and makes contact with a piezoelectric unit that initiates release of gas into the burner while simultaneously emitting a spark in the area of the burner to ignite the gas. The penlight feature consists of an LED light assembly incorporated into the actuator's top cap situated so as to depress the piezoelectric unit. The LED light assembly consists of a light emitting diode mounted on a platform, the whole of which is configured to fit within the LED top cap whereby the platform is a bottom wall of the LED top cap and contains a power source in the form of a battery holder that fits between the piezoelectric unit and the outer casing of the lighter. A pressure switch on the actuator operates the penlight.
