Publication number: 20130260320Abstract: An improved cooking range includes an improved notification system that is configured to detect an operated state of the range and to periodically output a notification representative of a duration of time that the range has remained in the operated state. The notification may include the audible outputting of an sound tag representative of one or more spoken words that indicate a duration of time that the apparatus has remained in the operated state and/or an operational level of the range. The notification system can additionally be configured to detect a predetermined condition such as a flame or an excessive ambient temperature in the vicinity of the range and output an audible and/or visible warning notification. The notification system can be built into the range or can be in the form of a system that can be retrofitted to an existing range. The system enhances operational safety.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 28, 2012Publication date: October 3, 2013Inventor: Randolph G. Townsend

Patent number: 8517717Abstract: The proper sizing of microchannel dimensions and the management of internal features offer the possibility of inherently safe operation within the flammable limits of a combustible fluid stream while preserving the largest-possible flow dimensions for industrial-scale process capacity. Specifically, the microchannel dimensions need not be restricted to gap distances below the quenching distance to be operated safely. Microchannel performance can be engineered to provide adequate heat transfer for flame propagation. However, it is essential to maintain flame characteristics in such a manner that it cannot transition to a detonation flame front. A detonation takes place when the combustion wave propagates at supersonic speeds at the existing local temperature and pressure conditions in the system. It results in a much larger energy release over a much smaller period of time as compared to a laminar flame or deflagration, the later of which is a combustion wave propagating at subsonic speed.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 2004Date of Patent: August 27, 2013Assignee: Velocys, Inc.Inventors: David J. Publication number: 20100248169Abstract: Disclosed are heaters having at least one adjustable fired burner and an adjustable fired burner for use with various types of heaters. The heaters may be part of an industrial processes such as petroleum refining. The adjustable burners are configured to be adjusted and positioned in any direction and then be locked into place. The adjustable burners may be adjusted automatically or manually. The ability to quickly adjust the position of an adjustable burner results in substantially less or virtually no damage to elements in the heater and provides for a more even distribution of heat within the heater.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 5, 2009Publication date: September 30, 2010Inventors: Edward R. Morgan, Kenneth D. Peters, Dennis M. Clary

Publication number: 20070281256Abstract: A gas burner capable of producing an image via a pattern of flames and illuminated glass beads is provided. The burner may comprise a top plate having a plurality of gas apertures for releasing a combustible gas. The gas apertures may be formed in a gas aperture frame. The gas apertures may form an outline of the image. The frame of the gas apertures may define a height and an apex or pinnacle. Recesses may be formed adjacent the gas apertures. Glass beads may be disposed within the recesses. A height of the glass beads may be generally lower than the height of the gas aperture frame such that the glass beads sit lower than the apex of the gas aperture frame. The glass beads may be illuminated via flames produced at the gas apertures. The flames and glass beads may collectively produce the image.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 2, 2006Publication date: December 6, 2007Inventor: Jeremy Joel Dodson

Patent number: 6694683Abstract: A sight glass retaining system is provided for mounting a sight glass to a support panel, such as for viewing combustion or other processes. The system includes a retainer which forms a continuous frame and has lateral flanges for locating the sight glass. Retaining tabs extend from the frame and support resilient retaining portions which snap into engagement with the support panel. A resilient element, which may form a seal with the sight glass and support panel, urges the assembly in compression to maintain tight engagement of the components, and generally column loads the retaining portions to preclude movement of the assembly on the support panel.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2001Date of Patent: February 24, 2004Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey D. Anderson, Kent D. Homfeldt

Publication number: 20030175632Abstract: An improved burner and a method for combusting fuel used in furnaces such as those found in steam cracking. The burner includes a burner tube having a downstream end and an upstream end, a burner tip adjacent a first opening in the furnace, so that combustion of the fuel takes place at the burner tip, a lighting chamber adjacent to the first opening in the furnace, and a removable lighting chamber plug having a shape effective to substantially fill the lighting chamber when positioned within the lighting chamber.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 14, 2003Publication date: September 18, 2003Inventors: George Stephens, David B. Spicer

Patent number: 6247919Abstract: An intelligent burner control apparatus is configured to control the flow rate of a fluid flowing from a fluid supply to a burner. The apparatus includes a flow controller, a flow regulator, and a flow monitor. The flow controller includes a sensor configured to measure the flow rate of the fluid. The flow controller is configured to determine a flow control signal based on a measured fluid flow rate. The flow regulator is configured to receive the flow control signal and includes a valve movable to control the flow rate of the fluid in response to the flow control signal. The flow monitor is configured to monitor a change in the position of the valve with respect to the measured fluid flow rate and to produce an alarm signal when the change in the position of the valve with respect to the measured fluid flow rate is outside of a predetermined threshold.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1999Date of Patent: June 19, 2001Assignee: Maxon CorporationInventors: Albert W. Welz, Jr., John D. Parker, Brenda J. Marchetti

Patent number: 4880376Abstract: Damper position of a damper in a heating system is monitored. The damper is movable between end positions in response to movement of a motor shaft. The motor shaft moves in response to a movement request signal. A shaft position signal is received by a position detector and has a value representative of position of the motor shaft. When the damper reaches an end position, it is determined whether the value of the shaft position signal is within a predetermined tolerance. If it is outside of the tolerance, then the system is shut down as unreliable; otherwise, the shaft position signal is recalibrated to maintain accuracy.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 1989Date of Patent: November 14, 1989Assignee: Honeywell Inc.Inventors: James I. Bartels, Paul B. Patton, Kenneth B. Kidder, Alfred J. Gaskell
