  • Patent number: 6716024
Abstract: In a standard lighter, a flame is obtained by rotating driving wheels of a striker wheel onto a spark stone. A pair of brake discs are mounted on an axis of a wheel assembly. Each of the pair of brake discs has a same diameter as that of the driving wheels. The pair of brake discs rotate freely relative to the driving wheels. The axis is loosely mounted in mounting slots and can move vertically. A gas release lever has a pair of extension portions placed beneath the pair of brake discs to interrupt or stop rotation of the pair of brake discs. To rotate the driving wheels, a considerable amount of extra force is required to overcome frictional force on the pair of brake discs, and would reduce a risk of fire damage caused by a child's inadvertent activation.

Abstract: A gas fueled lighter having a cylindrical body with a central bore forming a gas passage and a valve port. A check valve blocks flow from a reservoir to the passage, and contains a metering plug to pass gas to the passage. A valve plug threaded and sealed in the bore opens and closes the valve port. Such plug carries a turnknob head, contains a burner port from the gas passage, and carries a flame shield which supports a striker wheel. A flint is pressed against the wheel by a spring supported by a retainer plate on the valve plug. A cap threaded onto the body over the head has threads with the same lead as the valve plug threads so that if the cap is screwed onto the body when the valve is open, the cap will drivingly rotate the valve plug to closed position. A bottom flange on the cap and an O-ring in the body form a secondary seal to prevent fuel leakage and exclude dirt and moisture.

Abstract: A torch igniter for attachment to a torch nozzle having a nozzle tip through which a fuel is passed includes an igniter attachment on which a flint and abrading wheel is mounted. The flint is biased against the rim of the abrading wheel at a location thereon generally facing the nozzle tip so that rotation of the wheel generates sparks which are projected in front of the nozzle tip to ignite the fuel passing therefrom. A small electric or pneumatic motor may be connected to the flint wheel to rotate the wheel upon energization of the motor. Compressed gas fed to the torch nozzle may be utilized to drive the pneumatic motor; electric batteries are provided in the case of an electric motor. The igniter attachment is fixedly positioned rearwardly of the nozzle tip and laterally offset therefrom so that the attachment and motor are not adversely affected by the flame.
