  • Patent number: 4774931
Abstract: A portable heater comprising a double-wall vessel which forms a combustion chamber and encloses a suitable fuel. Air passages provide an airflow through the vessel for supporting combustion. Also included are endless conduits which entrap displaced fuel to prevent it from escaping from the heater through the air passages. Thus, fuel is prevented from escaping from the heater in all positions of the same in the event that the heater is dropped or otherwise upset. A set of cooling fins, encircling a fuel holder, cool the fuel to help maintain an even burn rate. The heater further includes an adjustable flame attenuator for selective heat control. At a low heat setting the invention may be used as a personal or close contact heater wherein an outer wall serves as a guard for preventing contact burns. A modified embodiment of the heater, for use in a tent, includes an air intake tube and a fuel for exchanging gases with the outside of the tent.

  • Patent number: 4521180
Abstract: A laboratory gas burner and control apparatus including a burner assembly made from electrically conductive material and adapted for positioning on a counter. Defined by the burner is an inlet for connection to a gas source and an outlet for feeding gas to a flame. An electrically operated valve controls the flow of gas to the burner outlet and an igniter is energizable by a power supply to ignite gas emanating from the burner outlet. Associated with the igniter is an activation circuit that produces either ignition periods during which the igniter is energized by the supply or non-ignition periods during which the igniter is deenergized. Initiation of each ignition period requires manipulation of a manual activation mechanism. Once ignited, the presence of flame at the burner outlet is detected by a flame sensing mechanism. A valve control circuit maintains the supply valve open only during either ignition periods or periods during which flame is detected by the sensing mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4486170
Abstract: In a liquid fuel combustion apparatus, the upper end of a wick is ready to be ignited when it projects upward from a pan portion, and is extinguished when it is withdrawn downward from the pan portion. The wick moves up and down as a first operating lever swings around an operating shaft. If the first operating lever is lowered, a retaining lever is raised by a bent strip. When the wick is in a position for high-temperature combustion, a retaining portion of the retaining lever engages a receiving portion of an interlocking plate. When the first operating lever is lowered, its engaging pin engages an engaging slit of an adjusting lever. If a knob of a thermal power control plate is moved up and down along a slot, the adjusting lever swings around a support pin, and the first operating lever swings slightly through the engaging pin and the engaging slit. Thus, the wick is moved up and down in a combustion region for adjustment of thermal power.
