  • Patent number: 6676407
Abstract: A warp resistant fuel feed door assembly for use in injecting supplemental fuel into a high temperature combustion chamber such as a rotating cement kiln without substantial loss of heat or combustion gases. The apparatus, which is positioned on the exterior side of a fuel passage transecting the wall of a rotating kiln, opens to receive fuel and then seals during the balance of the rotation of the kiln. Warping, bearing fracture, shaft distortion and jamming due to exposure to extreme heat and cooling are minimized by the sectional construction of the doors. The door includes a plate positioned over the mouth of the passage, a plurality of support arms attached to the plate and a hinge shaft attached to the arms. Stresses on the door structure from inconsistent expansion of the plate are reduced due to symmetrically spaced oblong and oversized bolt attachment bores in the support arms. Synchronous opening of the feed doors is achieved by levered rotation of the hinge shafts by an electric motor.

  • Patent number: 4411619
Abstract: Reaction vessels, furnace tubes, heating and cooling enclosures frequently have parts such as access ports, inlet tubes, inspection windows, etc. made of thermally transparent materials such as plastic, glass, quartz, oxides, nitrides and sulfides. When these parts extend outside the hot zone, they can act as "light pipes" carrying appreciable amounts of thermal radiation which can damage thermally sensitive gaskets or other materials used to secure external couplings or end closure flanges to these parts. Thermal radiation induced gasket damage is a frequent cause of stuck flanges and couplings. This problem is avoided by inserting a thermal radiation scattering region in the thermally transparent material between the hot zone and the end closure or gaskets. The thermal radiation is scattered and dispersed, so that the end zones receive less radiation and remain cooler. Milky quartz is a suitable scattering material for use with quartz furnace tubes or bell jars.

  • Patent number: 4251062
Abstract: A process for the ignition of sinter mixtures containing solid fuels and apparatus for carrying out this process. The ignition is effected by means of hot combustion gases which are produced, under certain specified conditions, by the combustion of gaseous or liquid fuel initially in a swirl combustion chamber and then under a hood from where they are suctioned through the sinter mix.

  • Patent number: 4230307
Abstract: A cooling device for a converter opening, such as a Peirce-Smith copper converter, has been disclosed wherein a cooling medium, which is a combustible liquid of high temperature cracking characteristics, is introduced in cooling conduits floatingly disposed in a refractory material lining an opening of a converter, through which, at high temperatures, the contents thereof are discharged. The lower vapor pressure of the cooling medium, the expansion and contraction of the conduit in individual cooling segments and the maintaining of the cooling medium under pressure improves the operation of the converter.

  • Patent number: 4182610
Abstract: A water-cooled furnace cover comprising a plurality of jackets each internally provided with a water channel. These jackets are arranged side by side to form a body portion of the cover. A number of fins extend from a surface of the body portion facing the interior of the furnace so that a slag layer may be adhered to the fins to easily form a heat insulating layer.

  • Patent number: RE31566
Abstract: A metallurgical vessel includes a cylindrical portion which is supported on a ring carrying a tilting spindle which is mounted for pivotal tilting movement of the vessel. The vessel includes a frustoconical mouth portion at its upper end which terminates in a mouth ring of reinforced construction. The construction includes a cooling arrangement for the mouth portion which comprises a plurality of groups of coils which are wound around the mouth portion and which are advantageously wound in the form of a multistart screw thread. Each group of coils includes an inlet and an outlet which is connected to a distributor through suitable valves. This distributor in turn is connected through a main distribution pipe which extends through an opening in the tilting ring and the tilting spindle and is connected to a source of fluid cooling medium through a rotary seal at the outer end of the tilting spindle.
