Abstract: Devices and corresponding methods can be provided to monitor or measure temperature of a target or to control a process. Targets can have low, unknown, or variable emissivity. Devices and corresponding methods can be used to measure temperatures of thin film, partially transparent, or opaque targets, as well as targets not filling a sensor's field of view. Temperature measurements can be made independent of emissivity of a target surface by, for example, inserting a target between a thermopile sensor and a background surface maintained at substantially the same temperature as the thermopile sensor. In embodiment devices and methods, a sensor temperature can be controlled to match a target temperature by minimizing or zeroing a net heat flux at the sensor, as derived from a sensor output signal. Alternatively, a target temperature can be controlled to minimize the heat flux.

In a preferred form of the invention, a plurality of web media materials are interposed between refractory materials and are simultaneously sintered in the sintering furnace. Following sintering the plurality of web media materials are separated from the refractory materials and the web media materials are independently rolled onto a plurality of output rollers. A tension device applies a tension acting upon opposed ends of the refractory materials for maintaining a constant tension therebetween for maintaining a constant force on the upper and lower surfaces of the plurality of media materials.

Abstract: This invention is for a novel method of treating carbon fiber. Carbon fiber is a very unique material and its processing requires high temperatures. Also since carbon fibers are lightweight and porous, heating is accomplished in this process by radiation with a heated gas flowing through the material. Also a float is used to transfer the material from one process station to another so as to prevent delaminating of the carbon fiber.

Abstract: A radiation furnace assembly for use in heating parts. The radiation furnace assembly includes a muffle having a top side, a bottom side, and a first side wall. The muffle defines a chamber with a main heating portion and a first side heating portion. Disposed adjacent to the muffle are top and bottom heating elements. A first control device is used to adjust the temperature of at least one of the top and bottom heating elements thus controlling the temperature within the main heating portion of the chamber. A first side heating element is disposed adjacent to the first side wall of the muffle. A second control device is used to adjust the temperature of the first side heating element independently of the top and bottom heating elements to increase the temperature within the first side heating portion of the chamber relative to the main heating portion.

Abstract: In an apparatus for heat treating a material web that enters and exits the apparatus through respective gaps, an air cushion generating unit includes a slot nozzle through which a ventilator blows a laminar flow of air, which then flows laminarly along a convexly curved surface of the unit, to form a laminar air cushion which flows directly along the material web through one of the gaps, then expands outside of this gap, and is sucked back into the air cushion generating unit and recirculated through the slot nozzle. The laminar air cushion steadily holds and supports the material web so that the mechanical gap size can be reduced while reducing losses of hot process air and still avoiding physical contact with the material web.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for the carbonization of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor fibers. The apparatus comprises a furnace, or series of furnaces in side-by-side arrangement. Each furnace includes a heater, an air inlet and an air diffusion plate. The fiber is located in the furnace above the air diffuser plate, such that heated air is evenly dispersed over the fibers. The method generally comprises the steps of heat treating the PAN precursor in an oxidizing environment to stabilize the fiber, and then further heat treating the stabilized fiber in an oxidizing environment to carbonize the stabilized fiber. The method can be carried out in a single furnace, or can be carried out in a series of furnaces in a continuous process.

Convective heat is channelled into a supply hood through a supply duct. Convective heat is also channelled out of a suction hood through a return duct.
