  • Patent number: 5678866
Abstract: A corrosion resistant hub with a metal insert and an elastomeric outer shell forms a coupling to join a conduit to an enclosure. The metal insert which serves as a grounding mechanism for the conduit comprises internal threads, located near the conduit receiving end of the insert, to connect the conduit to the hub, and external threads, located at the wire exiting end of the insert to connect the hub to the enclosure. A shell made of semi-rigid elastomeric material is molded onto the outer surface of the metal insert. The shell has an annular flange, a hexagonally shaped torquing section and a collar. The annular radial flange forms a reliable seal of the interface between the insert and the enclosure. The collar has a lip that forms a first seal of the junction between the conduit and the insert and internal threads that engage the conduit to provide a second seal of the junction between the conduit and the insert. The hub also has a bushing which is unitary with the shell via an aperture in the insert.

  • Patent number: 5669763
Abstract: A fuel pump unit comprises a pump supporting flange for closing an opening in a fuel tank. The supporting flange has a wet side from which projects a fuel pump and an opposite dry side from which projects a lip defining a through opening in the supporting flange. An electrical connector has a mating portion for mating with a further connector connected to the power supply for the pump. There depends from the mating portion an insulating block into which have been moulded electrical tabs each having one end projecting into the mating portion and the other end projecting below the insulating block. Leads are connected to these lower portions of the tab terminals by means of electrical clips. The connector is inserted through the opening in the supporting flange from the wet side thereof so that a resilient skirt surrounding the insulating block is force fitted to the inner surface of the lip and a sealing ring is compressed by a flange at the bottom of the skirt, against the wet side of the supporting flange.

  • Patent number: 5545061
Abstract: A panel lock connector includes a connector housing having chambers formed therein for accommodating electrical terminals and a spacer inserted into the connector housing in a direction perpendicular to a direction along which the terminals are inserted into the chamber. The connector housing is provided in a peripheral wall with an opening and flexible lock arms each of which has an engagement projection to be engaged with a hole formed in the panel. Under condition that the spacer is inserted into the opening and the connector housing is engaged into the panel incompletely, an axial end of the spacer is positioned close to the panel in comparison with the engagement projection. Under condition that the spacer is inserted into the connector housing incompletely, the top of the base projects from the peripheral wall. In such a case, a further insertion of the connector into the panel is restricted by an interference of the base of the spacer with the panel.

  • Patent number: 5532436
Abstract: The connector permits wires to be used to conduct signals through a fluid-tight boundary. The wire sheath is removed around a medial portion of the wire to expose the surface of the inner conductor. A sealing material contacts the inner conductor surface and also the adjacent sheath surfaces, thereby defining a serpentine boundary which inhibits fluid leakage along the wire surface. The connector is secured to a circuit board which simplifies the assembly of the connector into a blind aperture. A biasing member disposed between the connector and the circuit board operates to hold the connector within the aperture.

  • Patent number: 5501609
Abstract: This invention aims to provide a connector in which a stationary connector housing is provided on its flange with a cushion member to be closely attached to a panel to give a stable seal function regardless of a change of thickness of the panel. A male connector housing 13 of the connector is provided on an upper periphery on a hood 13b with a flange 13d. The male connector housing 13 is provided with securing fixtures 19 made of a leaf spring material. The housing 13 is secured to a periphery around an opening 12a in a panel 12 by clamping it between an upper elastic piece 19a and a flange 13d. The flange 13d is provided on its upper face with a cushion member 20 which is softer than a seal member 16 of a waterproofing cover 17. When a female connector housing 14 is fitted to the male connector housing 13, the seal member 16 closely contacts with a surface of the panel.

  • Patent number: 5391086
Abstract: An electrical connector assembly is comprised of an insulating housing for fixed mounting within an automotive body behind panel walls. A mating connector has a housing portion and a peripheral shroud. The shroud has integral latches which retain the shroud and housing together, and the shroud includes latches which retain the shroud to the panel. Actuating lugs are positioned on the front of the housing portion and are profiled for receipt within a groove on a camming slide. The latches hold the shroud and housing together during the actuation of the lugs and the camming slide. When the latches are locked behind the panel wall, the shroud inner surface contacts the panel wall, whereby the latches break free of the corresponding lugs on the housing. Continued actuation of the U-shaped camming slide moves the connector housing into fully locked position, leaving the shroud positioned against the wall.

  • Patent number: 5249982
Abstract: A panel mounted, sealed electrical connector assembly is provided for mounting in an aperture in a panel. The assembly includes a connector housing having a front mating end adapted to be inserted through the aperture from a first surface to at least a second surface of the panel in order to mate with a complementary electrical component. Locking arms project from the housing to mount the housing in the aperture. A sealing boot engages the housing rearwardly of the first surface and extends toward and engages the panel surrounding the aperture. Resilient flanges surround a substantial portion of the periphery of the housing and are adapted to be biased against the first surface of the panel. The sealing boot includes a forward peripheral lip adapted to be received between the flanges of the housing and the first surface of the panel surrounding the aperture, whereby the flanges resiliently bias the lip against the first surface and provides an environmental seal about the aperture.

  • Patent number: 5234221
Abstract: An elastomer seal is described which is useful for forming a sealed, flat mounting surface on a curved housing. The elastomer seal has a flat sealing face opposite a curved sealing surface. An angled transition surface is adjacent to the curved sealing surface forming a bevel. The bevel assists the seal in properly deforming so that a sealing area is formed across the curved housing. This seal provides peripheral and central contact so that the distribution of compressed seal material is well spread over the surface of the sealed area. The elastomer seal is able to effectively seal housings with radii of curvature from 1 to 6.4 times the curvature radius of the curved sealing surface.

Abstract: A lamp socket includes a housing in the form of an elastomeric grommet that passes through a round hole of a panel to mount the lamp socket to the panel. The grommet has a head at one end that has an outer diameter that exceeds the diameter of the hole and engages the back side of the panel when the head is inserted through the hole. The outer portion of the head consists of a plurality of thick oblique ribs that fold inwardly to reduce the outer diameter of the head responsive to twisting movement of the head in the hole so that a relatively low engage force passes the head through the hole. The grommet further includes a conical shoulder which sealingly engages the front side of the panel and clamps the lamp socket in place.

  • Patent number: 4840585
Abstract: A connector is described which can be easily installed in a hole of a barrier wall, which assures tight sealing when there is a substantial pressure difference on opposite sides of the wall, and which avoids set of the sealing material. The connector includes a frame with a radially inner portion and with a skirt extending around the inner portion and slightly bendable radially outward and inward. O-rings are mounted on the outside of the skirt, so when pressure causes the skirt to expand, the O-rings form a tight fit against the surface of the hole, while when pressure is relieved the seals are pressed with less force and avoid becoming set. A group of thin limiters extend between the skirt and the inner frame portion. The limiters allow the skirt to expand radially outwardly, but limit radially inward deflection of the skirt to assure that even when there is no pressure the O-rings push firmly against the hole surface.
