Patent number: 6682083Abstract: A snowboard-type ski system and apparatus utilizing two skis and rotary linkage to provide the skier with the natural feel of snowboarding and the response and control of two skis. The system coordinates and maintains parallel alignment, vertical motion, and consistent horizontal separation of the two skis through the use of two linkage cranks which rotate about an axis transverse to the direction of travel intended for the two skis. The linkage includes an elevated mounting assembly positioned between the two skis and above the snow upon which a skier may mount bindings. The points of attachment and rotation are between the skier's feet such that the point of attachment to the two skis is proximate to the ski manufacturer's intended loading point. The transverse rotary motion permits the two skis to cant with respect to one another, as the skier enjoys rough terrain, and maintains' natural motion and transfer of force between the two skis.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 2002Date of Patent: January 27, 2004Inventor: Daniel J. Patent number: 5911611Abstract: A water ski training apparatus is provided which includes a training apparatus body that is adapted to be connected to a water ski tow rope. The training apparatus body supports the user's feet directly or the water skis which in turn support the feet. The apparatus body is disengagable from the skis once the skier rises to a standing position in the water. In one form, the ski training apparatus body has left and right openings for left and right skis. The openings are larger than the skis so that the skis are able to slide easily within the openings and ultimately slide off the front end of each ski once the skier becomes at least partially elevated out of the water to a standing position. A tow rope clamp is supported on the training apparatus body for connecting the body to the tow rope so that the user can hold the end of the tow rope with his hands while the training apparatus body is secured to another portion of the rope by the clamp.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1998Date of Patent: June 15, 1999Inventor: David M. Patent number: 5458370Abstract: Ski apparatus two outer skis coupled to a third ski, located between the two outer skis, by four cranks, connected as a front pair and a rear pair. Each crank has a gear on one end and a free end. The free end of a crank is attached to a journal box on an outer ski to permit the crank to rotate freely. The gear of the crank from one outer ski meshes with the gear of a crank attached to the other outer ski, coupling the cranks in pairs and causing the cranks to rotate in opposite directions. The gears from each pair are contained in a gearbox attached to the third or middle ski. The cranks can be stiff or resilient and, if resilient, includes an elbow joint which is spring biased to force the middle ski below the outer skis.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1994Date of Patent: October 17, 1995Assignee: Daniel J. Patent number: 5080620Abstract: The water ski board of the present invention is a generally flat U-shaped board with an upward curvature at its forward end portion. Two short tails extend backward from the body of the board slightly forward of which is fixed a pair of foot bindings. The tails are of greater thickness than the board with a taper beginning at the front of each tail. A U-shaped channel with a plurality of holes provided along its length is affixed to the top of the board along its center axis to permit the tow line to be attached at any of the holes. The variable attachment of the tow lines allows the board to plane at different speeds, depending on the weight of the rider in relationship to the direction of pulling force from the boat. On the bottom surface of each tail a semicircular tunnel is formed at the approximate center running parallel to the axis. On both sides of the tunnel a tube runs through the length of the tail parallel to the axis.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 1990Date of Patent: January 14, 1992Inventor: Steven S. Reden

Patent number: 4981455Abstract: As an aid for a novice skier, a close fitting fabric glove confines the forward portion of a pair of water-skis. The glove both prevents excessive lateral separation of the skis and maintains a desirable minimum separation--both features greatly assisting a novice, for example, in "getting up" from a deep water start and in his stability when waterborne. The greater planing area of the glove, compared with the ski portions it covers, and its buoyancy (from air entrapment), both help the skier to "get up" more quickly. Flexibility of the fabric of the glove permits substantially normal relative tipping and pitching of the skis for control purposes. The glove is secured to the skis by snap fasteners.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1988Date of Patent: January 1, 1991Inventor: Charles R. Tubens
