Heat-activatable Adhesive Patents (Class 442/150)
  • Patent number: 6838398
Abstract: A method of making a quilt includes a batting including a heat activated adhesive coating each side or faces of the batting. The quilt covers are attached to the batting by sequentially placing the covers onto the respective batting faces and heating each cover and adjacent adhesive by moving a hot iron over each cover. The covers are connected to each by a plurality of spaced yarn or other suitable decorative connecting means which extend through the covers and batting to secure the batting in place and may form a desired decorative pattern. The inactive adhesive remains in the quilt or is removed by washing of the quilt. The batting with the inactive adhesive is provided as a commercially available product.

The resultant textile articles exhibit good seam strengths, durability and desirable aesthetics.

  • Patent number: 6187697
Abstract: The invention includes fibrous nonwoven multiple layer mats having at least two layers with a body portion layer and a surface portion layer having fine fibers and/or particles therein, both layers being bonded together and to each other with a same resin binder. Preferably most or essentially all of the particles and/or fibers in the surface layer are larger than openings between the fibers in the body portion of the mat. The mats produced according to this invention are useful as a facer for all types of boards such as wood boards, wood product boards, insulating boards and hard boards of all types, and also as reinforcement and dimensional stabilizers for making a large number of novel laminate products and for a myriad of other uses. These mats are made on a wet laid nonwoven mat machine with a modification to the binder preparation system, an inventive step in the preparation of the binder and in the selection of ingredients for a binder slurry.

  • Patent number: 6110565
Abstract: A heat bond seaming tape has a base formed of a sheet of paper or a paper-like material and an overlying strip of an open mesh material. A plurality of transversely spaced, longitudinally extending beads of a hot melt thermoplastic adhesive material is placed on a top surface of the mesh for adhering the tape to the backs of adjacent carpet edges. A strip of a polyolefin such as a semi-rigid high density polyethylene material is sandwiched between the base sheet and the strip of open mesh material and extends longitudinally along the center of the strip and extends transversely across the carpet seam to prevent seam buckling. The base sheet and reinforcing strip can be extruded as an integral one piece member of the high density polyethylene prior to being joined with the mesh and hot melt adhesive.

Abstract: A gelatinous composite article has a sealant layer, a permeable layer and a heat formable and heat reversible gelatinous elastomer material. The sealant layer melts within a first temperature range. The permeable layer is over the sealant layer and melts at a second temperature greater than the first temperature range. The heat formable and heat reversible gelatinous elastomer material is over the permeable layer and fuses to the sealant layer within the first temperature range. The sealant layer and the gelatinous elastomer material adhere to each other through the permeable layer once the first temperature is attained. Thereby, the permeable layer secures to the gelatinous layer.

  • Patent number: 6025285
Abstract: A method and apparatus for aligning discontinuous fibers (F 101, 212) is described. A feeder apparatus (20, 120, 220, 220A) is used to align the fibers in a horizontal plane for feeding to the aligning apparatus (40, 140, 240, 240A) providing an electrical (E) field to orient the fibers in one preselected direction. A support or conveyor (70, 170, 270) receives the aligned fibers. The method and apparatus provides composite products having improved physical properties because of the alignment. The fibers can be of different lengths and a mixture of different types to make composites with controlled microstructure and properties. The composite materials can be in the form of non-woven, discontinuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic stampable sheets with controlled fiber orientation distribution. The composites are useful for a variety of goods.
