    Abstract: Plies of continuous fiber material are oriented and cut to the intended shape of a structural component, such as the vertical tail of an aircraft. Two skins or laminates are created by laying the cut-to-shape plies into a matched mold, with over-woven or over-braided mandrels or similar tooling details placed between the skins. The mold is closed and a thermosetting resin is injected into the mold to fully impregnate any fibers that were unimpregnated at the time of mold closure and to fully fill all void areas inside the mold. The mold is held closed with pressure, such as by a press, and heated to cure the resin while the resin in the mold is subjected to a hydrostatic pressure sufficient to constrain growth of voids. The contiguous faces of the impregnated braid or weave covering the mandrels are united by the resin, forming vertical or angular laminate between the inner faces of the skins.

The web transfer belt includes a high-molecular weight elastic member 2 having a web-receiving face 2b for receiving a web P to transfer, and a surface layer forming member 3 disposed on the high-molecular weight elastic weight member 2. A portion of high-molecular weight elastic weight member 2 is exposed on web-receiving face 2b, with one of the web-receiving face 2b and surface layer forming member 3 being made of a hydrophobic material. In this way, water-repellent portions and water-condensing portions are dispersed on the web-receiving face, with recesses and protrusions at fine scales, which can break a water film formed between web-receiving face 2b and web P, and can be easily formed on the web-receiving face 2b.

    Abstract: A fabric for garments to be used in cold temperatures or at high altitudes includes an inner layer comprising a thin, comfortable fabric having relatively poor moisture absorption, such as silk, nylon tricot, or polyester tricot, is laminated to a barrier layer comprising a hydrophobic, moisture and air impervious film such as polyethylene, which in turn is laminated to an insulating layer such as fleece or polyurethane fiberfill. The fabric is laminated using an adhesive comprising a mixture of acrylic and polyurethane with a cross linkage catalyst which reacts with active hydrogen groups in polyurethane, heated for about one minute between 180° F. and 220° F. to dry and cure the lamination.

    Abstract: A calender belt for the compliant calendering of a paper web includes an endless base substrate, a staple fiber batt attached to at least the outside of the endless base substrate, and a polymeric resin material totally impregnating the fiber/base composite structure comprising the endless base substrate and the staple fiber batt to a substantially uniform depth. That depth may be such that the polymeric resin material does not reach the base substrate, or partly or completely impregnates the base substrate. A layer of polymeric resin material is built up upon the staple fiber material to a predetermined thickness. Once the polymeric resin material is cured, it is ground to a desired smoothness without exposing any fiber on the ground surface.

    Abstract: A structural component which consists of a fiber-reinforced, composite material is provided with a protective coating against erosion. The protective coating includes an adhesion-promoting, intermediate layer on the component, an electrically insulating baked, inorganic lacquer layer for protection against erosion and an electrically conducting covering layer, for protection against lightning strikes. The covering layer consists of a baked and compressed inorganic lacquer and the lacquer of the lacquer layer and of the covering layer is baked on the component below the temperature which causes damage to the structural component or below the softening or decomposition temperature of the component. The protective layer is advantageously used for the external components of propulsion units, such as housings, nose cones or fan blades.
