Abstract: A beehive according to this disclosure includes a plurality of modular sections that are configured to be positioned adjacent to one another in a manner that enables simplified, even automated, extraction of honey. Such a beehive may include, or even consist essentially of, a plurality of interchangeable rings, or plates, that are configured to be stacked relative to one another in an assembled relationship, and to be secured together in the assembled relationship. In some embodiments, a beehive may consist of a plurality of rings and a mechanism for securing the rings in an assembled relationship (e.g., tie rods, etc.).
Abstract: The present invention is a vented top bar beehive system comprised of a vented top bar beehive and a harvest box. The beehive contains viewing panels which allow the hive be viewed, providing an education component. In addition, the top bars and honeycomb may be removed from inner chamber for viewing. When a top bar and honeycomb are removed, the bees stay on the honeycomb, reducing the need for protective gear or the bees to be smoked prior to working with the hives. The vented top bar beehive is suited to the way bees naturally want to create their hive and is easy to maintain, making it ideal for noncommercial beekeepers who want to decentralize beekeeping, enhance local pollination and help offset colony collapse.
Abstract: Compositions and methods for disinfecting bee colonies for preventing or treating diseases in honey bees, honey bee larvae and honey bee hives are disclosed. Such diseases may arise from a variety of sources, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa and parasites in the hive. Representative diseases preventable or treatable by this invention include Foulbrood and Chalkbrood. The compositions of the present invention include a protic acid and a chlorite ion, and may further include other optional components such as a gelling agent, colorant and/or preservative. Methods disclosed herein include applying the composition to a surface of a bee-hive. Honey produced by bees administered a composition of this invention is also disclosed.
