  • Patent number: 6881133
Abstract: A double surface grinding method for a vertical type of double disc surface grinding machine in which upper and lower ground surfaces of a work like a disc brake are ground simultaneously. The entire vertical moving stroke of the grinding wheel includes an idle feed stroke in which the wheel moves at a specified idle feed speed from the waiting position to a detection start position before contacting with the ground surface; a detection stroke in which the wheel moves at a detection speed lower than the idle feed speed from the detection start position to a detection end position after contacting with the ground surface then the wheel detects a grinding start position; and a grinding stroke in which the wheel moves at a grinding speed from the grinding start position to a grinding end position.

Abstract: An abrading machine is disclosed for abrasion of substantially plane items by use of rotating abrading discs, which are moved simultaneously forwards and backwards transverse to the item and which preferably has downward extending abrasive lamellae. The machine also preferably includes one, typically two, opposite rotating abrading cylinders fitted with elongated abrasive elements radially mounted on the abrading cylinder and has abrasive lamellae extending outwards from the cylinder. By moving the abrading discs in a reciprocatory movement transverse to the direction of feed of the items it is achieved that traces etc. from the different abrasive properties of the abrading discs are eliminated as well as all parts of milled out areas etc. are evenly abraded, particularly if the abrading device is designed for using abrading discs with abrasive means comprising abrasive lamellae made of abrasive cloth and which extend downwards from the face of the abrading disc.

Abstract: A new machine for and method of manufacturing fluted pin fasteners and the pins produced thereby are disclosed which utilize a circular grinding arrangement of a plurality of grinders which grind flutes into a threaded pin. An internally threaded collar threads onto the pin. When the collar engages a surface of a work piece, resistance to further threading increases. When sufficient resistance to threading occurs, the driver deforms the lobes of the collar radially inward toward the axis of the collar. Material of the collar positioned internally from the lobes responds to deformation of the lobes and flows radially inward into the flutes of the pin to lock the collar, pin, and work piece together. The driver then rotates freely, and a joint has been made with a predetermined axial load thereby locking the component parts together.

  • Patent number: 5700179
Abstract: The invention features flattening a sliced wafer in a thin disc-like form, and chamfered if necessary, through simultaneous double side grinding by passing the wafer through between paired cylindrical grinding rolls supported at both ends in bearings, and subsequently single side polishing or double side polishing the flattened wafer to obtain a polished wafer. A lapping step and an etching step in the related art thus can be dispensed with to curtail the process time. The grinding is done by simultaneous double side grinding, so that it is free from slice mark transfer due to vacuum suction of wafer to hold the wafer, or unlike a wax mounting system it does not involve complicated operation. Furthermore, instead of batch grinding, continuous grinding can be readily made. The process is thus free from working stock removal fluctuations and permits high flatness and stable thickness to be obtained by the grinding.

  • Patent number: 5700184
Abstract: A dental instrument sharpening system includes an instrument arm for holding a chiral bladed dental instrument and for facilitating movement of at least one of the chiral blades of the dental instrument to a rotatable sharpening stone. A positioning mechanism, coupled to the instrument arm, positions at least one of the chiral blades of the dental instrument in a desired predetermined position. The positioning mechanism includes a clamping mechanism and indexed slotted member. The indexed slotted member has index protrusions, such as protruding nubs, that matingly engage with indentations in the handle of the dental instrument. The handle of the dental instrument includes at least one index indentation such as a conical indentation. The index indentation and the corresponding index protrusion mate to properly position the blade of the dental instrument in a predetermined longitudinal and axial position in the clamping mechanism.

Abstract: A slide table is slidably supported on the slide stage which is moved by a guide screw. The slide table is connected with the slide stage by means of pressurization means. A rotatable wafer table is provided on the slide table. A grinding wheel for chamfering is used. The pressurization means is locked, so that the slide table is kept locked to the slide stage. A wafer set on the slide table is moved toward the grinding wheel, and an edge of the wafer is chamfered. A grinding wheel for polishing is used. The pressurization means is not locked, so that the slide table can be slide on the slide stage. A wafer set on the slide table is moved toward the grinding wheel, and an edge of the wafer is polished.

Abstract: A device for producing inclines and/or grooves on friction pads, such as brake pads for motor vehicles comprises a table with a mount for the brake pads. The table is linearly moved on a carriage below flat, truncated-conical grind disks which are disposed in pairs and oriented mutually mirror-symmetrical. The table is swivellable about an axis oriented tranversely to the travel direction. The swivel movement is effected by at least one pneumatic cylinder. Control valves or control switches run onto cam ramps on cam bars when the table is driven forward and they initiate the swivel operation of the table. The friction pad is operated on when the table is in the downwardly or upwardly pivoted position, whereby the table is preferably locked in its position during the various grinding operations.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for grinding a workpiece which is supported for rotation about a first axis with a first grinding wheel supported for rotation about a second axis and a second grinding wheel supported for rotation about a third axis. The first grinding wheel engages with the workpiece in a location which is substantially diametrically opposed to the location at which the second grinding wheel engages with the workpiece. Control means are disclosed for controlling the radial grinding force imparted to the workpiece by the first and second grinding wheels so that the force imparted to the workpiece from the first grinding wheel is substantially equal and opposed to the force imparted to the workpiece by the second grinding wheel to prevent distortion of the workpiece.
