    Abstract: A rotary grinding system includes a support frame and a grinding assembly coupled to the support frame for longitudinal movement, with respect to a workpiece attached to the support frame. A radial arm is suspended below the grinding assembly and rotated in a plane parallel to the workpiece. A grinding wheel traverses the radial arm, thereby working a circular, annular or sector portion of the workpiece. The height, and therefore the depth of cut, of the grinding wheel may be precisely adjusted via a single point adjustment screw or the like. Optionally, the grinding system may be controlled by a computer numeric controller (CNC) to automatically refinish programmed portions or all of the workpiece. Eccentric pins extending from the support frame and into the workpiece may be used to adjust the lateral position of the support frame, relative to the workpiece.

The apparatus can be attached to the surface of the disk to be refinished and is leveled using special precision leveling adjusters. During operation, the adjusters are turned in precision increments to set the depth of cut. The grinder is then rotated on an arm about the center of the disk, by the use of a hydraulically driven speed reducer, rotor, bearing assembly. In a further aspect, the invention includes a dressing assembly for performing dressing-truing on a vitreous wheel when the wheel is in grinding position. The in position dressing assembly dresses a grinding wheel at up to 0.00125-inch increments.

    Abstract: A grinding support for supporting a workpiece, such as a pin member, during a process of grinding the workpiece. The support particularly supports the workpiece in a stable position during grinding so that larger grinding "cuts" can be taken, thereby speeding the process. In addition, the positioning of the support can be precisely controlled to ensure a consistent grind along the length of the workpiece. The grinding support may be used in a grinding support assembly in which a workpiece is supported at one end thereof by the aforementioned support, and at another end by a known type of support, the latter preferably being rotatable, whereby the workpiece can be rotated during the grinding process.

    Abstract: A lower side of a rotatable grindstone spindle is connected directly to a PZT (Piezoelectric element). By changing electric drive supplied to the PZT, reciprocating movement can be applied to the grindstone through the grindstone spindle in addition to rotational movement. As a result, the grinding locus of an abrasive grain of the grindstone on a taper surface of a workpiece becomes a sine wave, and therefore, the grinding locus can be shifted in a direction other than in a peripheral direction. In this way, the removed amount of the taper surface increases, and circularity of the taper surface can be made to equal to 0.3 .mu.m or less.

    Abstract: A wheel-head feed mechanism for a grinder comprising a base and a wheel head which is guided by a linear guide section provided on the base and rotatably supports a grinding wheel via a wheel spindle driven by a motor. The wheel-head feed mechanism includes feed screw mechanism composed of a screw shaft and a nut unit engaged with the screw shaft, the feed screw mechanism advancing and retracting the wheel head with respect to a workpiece, and servomotor for rotating one of the screw shaft and the nut unit. The screw shaft is offset from the linear guide section toward the wheel spindle. The nut unit includes a radial hydrostatic bearing section for supporting the root of a male thread of the screw shaft in the radial direction of the screw shaft by hydrostatic pressure, as well as a thrust hydrostatic bearing section for supporting the flanks of the male thread of the screw shaft in the axial direction of the screw shaft by hydrostatic pressure.

    Abstract: A method of grinding control edges of a control bush of a rotary slide valve for hydraulic steering of motor vehicles, includes placement of the control bush in a support in form of slide shoes or a V block and additionally securing the control bush in the support by pressure rollers. A precise angular positioning of the control bush is effected by press-fitting a mandrel into the interior of the control bush. After grinding the control bush to a predetermined outside diameter, the reference points commensurate with the angular position of the individual control edges are determined by a measuring system. Based on the determined reference points, an optimum reference point for the angular position of all control edges is computed and utilized for adjusting the mandrel in form of a zero point shift for grinding the control edges.

    Abstract: A grinding machine includes a rotating grinding wheel and workpiece moving apparatus operable to move a workpiece towards and away from the wheel. The apparatus is arranged to move a workpiece support arcuately about an axis to move a workpiece towards or away from the wheel. A motor turns the workpiece to present different parts of the workpiece to the wheel, and an orientation detector signals the orientation of the workpiece so that the operations of the workpiece moving apparatus, and the motor can be coordinated to cause a desired profile to be ground on the workpiece. The machine also comprises correcting apparatus operable in response to the operation of the workpiece moving apparatus to cause the output of the orientation detector to be altered to compensate for angular alterations in the point of contact of the workpiece with the grinding wheel caused by the arcuate movement of the workpiece support.

The crown has a lower surface with a radial interior edge adapted to be supported on the upper end of the column. The crown has a plurality of radially extending fins each with an enlarged height at its radially exterior edge and an upper surface at an angle with respect to the vertical. Each upper surface has a dove tail recess. A cylindrical bushing sleeve is positioned within the bore of the column. The bushing sleeve has an upper end located at an intermediate extent of the column and a lower end located beneath the lower end of the column.

    Abstract: In a bore size correcting apparatus, a passing-through jig of an extended type lapping reamer in the bore size trimming device is passed through the bore surface of the workpiece machined by the bore grinding machine to correct the inner size of the workpiece, either one of the bore size to be corrected and a corrected bore size of the workpiece is measured by the bore size measuring device, a signal is outputted in accordance with the corrected bore size, and in response to the output signal, a machining command is supplied from the bore size control device to at least one of the in-process fixed-size control device and the external size control device. Thus, the bore size of the workpiece roughly manufactured by grinding can be precisely finished, with no skill, so as to have any optional set value, and the correction apparatus is also made compact and inexpensive.

    Abstract: An apparatus for measuring and recording the angular position of the edges of axially extending grooves disposed on an inside cylindrical bore surface or outside cylindrical surface of a workpiece is characterized in that the apparatus includes a shoe, pressed into intimate contact with the surface over a zone of the shoe. The zone incorporates an orifice, extending away from the zone of intimate contact to a plenum chamber, to which fluid is supplied. Relative rotation between the workpiece and the shoe is produced. A measuring device measures the degree of restriction to flow of fluid from the orifice as the edges traverse the orifice during relative rotation. An angular positional measurement device measures relative rotation, such that relative angular positions of the workpiece are recorded at each relative rotational position corresponding to a predetermined degree of restriction of the orifice as successive edges of the grooves traverse the orifice.

    Abstract: A machine for grinding the metering edge contours on edges of axially extending grooves of a power steering valve input-shaft by means of a cylindrical grinding wheel, the machine being constructed to hold and rotate the input-shaft and to increase and decrease cyclically the distance between the axis of the input-shaft and the grinding wheel several times during the revolution of the input-shaft to grind metering edge contours to produce symmetrical sets of clockwise and anticlockwise metering edge contours. The input-shaft is centrelessly supported by means of surfaces tangentially contacting the outside diameter of the input-shaft. Two such surfaces are axially displaced on either side of the ends of the grooves in the input-shaft and are arranged one on each side of the grinding wheel on that side of the input shaft adjacent the grinding wheel.

    Abstract: A poppet valve cleaner 10 includes a frame 20, a poppet valve brush assembly and a carriage assembly. The poppet valve brush assembly includes a drive motor 32 and a pair of cup shaped steel wire brushes 44 and 46 driven by the motor. The carriage assembly includes a carriage support shaft 54 and a carriage plate 64 that is pivotally and slidably attached to the carriage support shaft. A chuck assembly 86 is mounted on the carriage plate 64. A drive roller 138 is mounted in the side walls 88 and 90 of the chuck assembly and is rotated by an electric motor 144. A valve stem 14 is positioned between idler rollers 96 and 98 and compression roller 108 that is biased toward the idler rollers by a compression spring 134. The idler rollers 96 and 98 are driven by drive roller 138 to rotate the poppet valve. The carriage plate 64 is manually movable to position the valve head 16 between the steel wire brushes 44 and 46 and to move surfaces of the valve into contact with the brushes to remove carbon from the valve.
