  • Patent number: 7591715
Abstract: A hand-held, manually-operated sanding tool including a base member, a clamping mechanism, and a tab. The clamping mechanism is pivotally mounted to the base member, in alignment with a contact surface thereof such that the clamping mechanism pivots between a closed position and an open position in which a gap is defined between the clamping mechanism and the contact surface. The tab extends at least partially between the contact surface and the clamping mechanism, and establishes a stop surface that positively positions an edge of a sheet of abrasive material relative to an end of the base member as part of a loading operation.

  • Patent number: 7488242
Abstract: A sander comprises a body member molded of polypropylene to which a soft pad member is integrally molded or directly bonded thereto. Preferably, the material comprising the pad member is of a thermoplastic elastomer material, such as Santoprene®. Significantly, when the pad member is molded directly to the body member, the pad has internal dimensions only slightly larger than the external dimensions of the body member so that, when the body member is located within the confines of the pad member, a secure fit is formed between these two members, without any space between them. Further, the respective dimensions of the body member and pad member give the sander a thick, one-piece appearance in side and end views. The pad member may also include a plurality of openings which help provide a “spongy” effect to the user, smoothing the peaks and reaching the valleys of an uneven surface upon which the sander is utilized.

Abstract: Abrasive articles are disclosed that may be used in dry sanding applications. The abrasive articles disclosed may be made entirely from abrasive materials or alternatively may be made by fastening abrasive surfaces to handles or tools. The abrasive articles of the present invention have abrasive surfaces with controlled wear rates that renew themselves during use. The self renewing abrasive surfaces of the present invention may be prepared by pressing a mixture of abrasive particles and a minimal amount of a foam binder together into a mold and subsequently allowing the mixture to foam, break down, and harden. Alternatively, high loading densities of abrasive with larger amounts of foam binder may be employed that retain their foam integrity. The resulting abrasive articles are long lasting and may be made low in cost.

  • Patent number: 6988940
Abstract: This manual, vacuum-enabled dustless sander provides complete debris collection from both the working surface and area extending peripherally beyond the sander head while overcoming other deficiencies of prior art by projecting an abrasive screen above the sander head to form a rectangular mound which abrades while allowing debris to be drawn through itself. The projection is achieved by placing the abrasive screen atop an air permeable cushion supported by a rectangular platform made to rotate at a position of use at the intake end of a hollow shaft. Ends of the screen are inserted between the walls of two rectangular containers which rotate on the shaft and loosely embrace the platform. Rotating the shaft moves the threaded inner down the shaft into the lower container to clamp the screen in place. Vacuumed air draws all abraded debris into the sander head and through the hollow shaft to a collection canister.

  • Patent number: 6976909
Abstract: An extended sanding support tool, consistent with certain embodiments of the present invention has an elongated metal housing having first and second ends. A first bearing is coupled to the housing adjacent the first end and a second bearing is within the housing closer to the second end than the first end. A mandrel has a drill attachment end and a working end and passes through the first and possibly second bearings with the working end extending beyond the first end of the housing. In one embodiment, a cavity between the second end of the housing and the second bearing is provided for engaging a stationary portion such as a collar of an outer surface of a rotary tool housing an outer surface of a chuck of a rotary tool. In another embodiment a cone shaped structure receives the outer surface of the chuck. A cutting or sanding device is attached to the working end of the mandrel.

  • Patent number: 6926595
Abstract: An oscillatory drive comprising a rotating drive shaft is disclosed. The oscillatory drive is driven by an eccentric element that is coupled via a pivot element to a tool drive shaft arranged at an angle to the drive shaft for oscillatingly driving the tool drive shaft pivoting back and forth about its longitudinal axis. The eccentric element comprises a spherical outer ring which is guided within an at least partially cylindrical inner surface of the pivot element. By spring biasing the free end of the pivot element at both outer sides against the housing, efficiency is improved and vibrations are reduced.

  • Patent number: 6893334
Abstract: A guard for a rotary cutting tool allows for automatic adjustment of the guard relative to the cutting disc and to a workpiece. Such an automatic adjustment allows a user to cut around substantially the entire circumference of a rounded workpiece, such as a pipe, without requiring alteration of the angle at which the tool is held, repositioning by the user, or repositioning or removal of the guard. The guard includes a bracket for mounting the guard to the rotary cutting tool, a hood mounted to the bracket and enclosing a portion of the cutting disc, and a spring for biasing one end of the hood into substantially continuous contact with the workpiece during operation of the rotary cutting tool.
