Patent number: 11896019Abstract: An apparatus and method of use for a cartridge-type animal stunner comprising an elongated stunner housing having a muzzle and a breech with a cartridge chamber for receiving an explosive charge. A captive penetrating-type stunning rod capable of being propelled forward is received in the bore. The stunning rod has an opening throughout the entire length thereof. Upon placement of the housing forward end against an animal and activation of a trigger, a firing pin moves to impact a cartridge in the cartridge chamber, causing explosion of the cartridge. The stunning rod is propelled forward to penetrate the animal head to a brain. Simultaneously, a portion of combustion products from explosion of the cartridge travel into the stunning rod opening at a rearward end, along the length of the rod, and out of the stunning rod forward end into the animal brain to cause rapid lethal damage thereto.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2021Date of Patent: February 13, 2024Assignee: Jarvis Products CorporationInventors: Jonathan Jarvis, Charles Bildstein

The second contact tip (23) is pivotable to activate a proximity switch (43), which closes the circuit and allows voltage to be applied to the first contact tip (15) via the first voltage wire (47) and the second contact tip (23) via the second voltage wire (46) to stun the animal.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2001Date of Patent: March 30, 2004Assignee: Hormel Foods, LLCInventors: Eric S. Patent number: 6623347Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing and maintaining a gas mixture in one or more phases, in which the phases are generated in zones of, for example, a stunning tunnel or a stunning shaft. The gas mixture includes carbon dioxide gas and oxygen gas, and the concentration of air is maintained at a level equivalent to a concentration level in air. Carbon dioxide is added based on the measured level of carbon dioxide in each zone.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2001Date of Patent: September 23, 2003Assignee: Norsk Hydro ASAInventors: Aage Grimsland, Bent Kloster Andreasen

Patent number: 6200210Abstract: A method is described comprising stunning a ruminant at a packing plant, and thereafter measuring tissue characteristics of the ruminant using a tissue imaging and analysis device prior to processing the ruminant to a carcass. Working embodiments of the method have used an ultrasound tissue imaging and analysis device, although other analyses also can be performed. The ultrasound analysis can be performed by one operator, or plural operators. For example, if the device is an ultrasound tissue analysis device, the step of conveying may first comprise conveying the ruminant to a position adjacent a first operator. The first operator applies an ultrasound image enhancing fluid to the ruminant's hide, and a second operator places the ultrasound tissue analysis device adjacent the enhancing fluid and performs ultrasound tissue imaging and analysis on the ruminant.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1998Date of Patent: March 13, 2001Assignee: Micro Beef Technologies, Inc.Inventor: William C. Patent number: 6165528Abstract: Providing a method of injection into meat in which brine for curing or seasoning liquid is uniformly dispersed in a green meat efficiently and continuously without deteriorating a meat property; curing and seasoning can be accomplished without using a tumbling machine, a massage machine or the like for a long time; and the brine for curing and the seasoning liquid can be uniformly dispersed even if there is a difference of injection resistance in meat property. This can be achieved by using a pickle injector which is provided with a high-pressure liquid generator constituted of a plunger pump or the like, a coherent stream injection nozzle for injecting the brine for curing and a pressure control mechanism which can raise an injection pressure gradually from zero or a low pressure while injecting the liquid substance when the brine for curing is injected from the nozzle to the green meat.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1999Date of Patent: December 26, 2000Assignee: Prima Meat Packers, Ltd.Inventors: Yoshihiko Tanaka, Takashi Tsuzuku, Akihiro Suzuki

Patent number: 6135872Abstract: Method and apparatus for unloading poultry as disclosed. A chute (35) is placed proximate the door of a coop. The door is opened and the poultry are urged out of the coop onto the chute (35). The poultry then slide down the chute (35) onto a conveyor (11), (15) which ultimately transfers the poultry to a gas stun vessel (25). The poultry are then transferred to a shackle line where they are shackled, without a full lift, and then proceed to an electrical stun (72) and killer (73). The gas stun vessel (25) includes a static mixer (53) for effectively mixing the CO.sub.2 and air before delivery to the gas stun vessel (25).Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 1999Date of Patent: October 24, 2000Assignee: Hormel Foods CorporationInventors: James P. Patent number: 5692951Abstract: A hydraulic stunner apparatus for use in slaughtering animals includes a housing that defines a cylinder within which a rear seat is disposed. An elongated stunner element is received in and closes off the front end of the cylinder. The stunner element is movable between a cocked position in which the first end of the element is sealed against the seat, and a fired position in which the first end of the element is unseated and the stunner element is extended relative to the cylinder. Hydraulic fluid under pressure is directed into the cylinder to pressurize the cylinder, and an actuator is provided for unseating the stunner element from the cocked position to initiate movement of the element to the fired position. Preferably, the apparatus also includes a compressible biasing assembly for maintaining the hydraulic pressure within the cylinder upon separation of the stunner element from the seat and movement of the stunner element toward the extended position.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 1996Date of Patent: December 2, 1997Assignee: Hantover, Inc.Inventor: Bernard G.
