    Abstract: A mixer, which forms the core part of an air-conditioning assembly of a rail vehicle, has two inlets, an outlet, and a central region between the inlets and the outlet. A first inlet is connected to a fresh air supply, and a second inlet is connected to a circulating air supply such that fresh air and circulating air reach the central region, where the circulating air is mixed with the fresh air to obtain supply air. The central region is connected to the fresh air inlet via an opening, which forms a transition region between the fresh air inlet and the central region. The transition region contains a profiled section with a wing-shaped cross-section in the transition region where the supplied fresh air generates negative pressure along the transition region, and the circulating air is suctioned into the central region of the mixer with a boost from the negative pressure.

The air is controlled by means (6) for determining the air quality value, whereby the fresh air portion is kept to a minimum, dependent on the number of passengers carried in the vehicle interior (8), in such a way that a predetermined tolerance range for the air quality value is essentially observed, at least during normal operation without pressure fluctuations. A plurality of modules can be mounted in various relationships to collectively provide the total capacity required by the bus. Each module includes an evaporator section, a condenser section and a power section including a compressor and an inverter. The evaporator sections have a return air compartment that extends a substantial distance across the roof of the bus such that a single design can meet the needs of various return air duct installations of various types of buses. Provision is made for the selective mixing of return air with fresh air, with the mixture then being passed by the evaporator blower through the evaporator coils and into the supply air ducts.

A one-to-one correspondence between the rate of return buildup of radon to the ventilation rate of the space is established. Empirically measured values of radon accumulation after purge are compared to stored tables of theoretical values. Adjustments may be made to account for residual radon after purge.

When the compartment is partitioned, the ventilating apparatus is individually provided for each partitioned compartment and the third conduit is connected to a discharge port of a lavatory.
