Patent number: 5361404Abstract: Two or more signal paths are provided for receiving a radio frequency signal. One or more signal paths include conventional bandpass filters for eliminating interference and noise signals. One or more remaining signal paths include reduced filtering devices for increasing the sensitivity of a radio frequency receiver to the desired signal. Each of the receiving paths is coupled to a respective radio frequency amplifier. Provided that each radio frequency amplifier has equivalent current-source output impedances, the output signals from each amplifier are added constructively if they are in-phase. If the output signals are out-of-phase, a phase inverter inverts the phase of one signal so that the signals may be added constructively. The combined signals of the two or more radio frequency amplifiers pass through various signal processing components associated with conventional superheterodyne receivers. A control unit produces gain variation signals for controlling the gain of each radio frequency amplifier.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1993Date of Patent: November 1, 1994Assignee: Ericsson-GE Mobile Communications Inc.Inventor: Paul W. Patent number: 5341179Abstract: In a BS (direct broadcast by satellite) timer recording mode, a constant voltage diode for controlling 18 V is directly inserted in a power circuit. Alternatively, a delay circuit is inserted at the input of a switching circuit for switching the constant voltage diode, thus absorbing the switching time difference between 140-V control and 18-V control. Therefore, the secondary side output voltages can be prevented from being increased, and the output voltages can be stabilized both in the BS timer recording mode (light load powering) and in the television mode (maximum load powering).Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 1992Date of Patent: August 23, 1994Assignee: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.Inventor: Hirofumi Konishi

Patent number: 5335359Abstract: In a digital radio communications system, a transmit signal is delayed and sent on a first diversity channel and a nondelayed version of the signal sent on a second diversity channel. At the receiving site, first and second diversity channel signals are recovered and normalized into first and second constant-amplitude signals. Predominant components of the constant-amplitude signals are phase-and-amplitude aligned with each other by feedback loops including phase-and-amplitude alignment circuits, an adder and an AGC amplifier. The output of the AGC amplifier or the output of the subtracter is selected and applied to a matched filter to which a decision feedback equalizer is coupled.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 1991Date of Patent: August 2, 1994Assignee: NEC CorporationInventors: Ichiro Tsujimoto, Yoshiyuki Fujimoto

Patent number: 5313282Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling electrical power to a satellite broadcast receiver forming a part of a television device. The television device receives a command receiving a command (e.g. from a remote controller) to turn off electrical power. The television device determines if broadcast satellite recording is currently being executed, for example by an external VTR connected to an output port of the television device. If broadcast satellite recording is being executed, power is turned off power to a portion of the television device while retaining electrical power to the satellite broadcast receiver. If broadcast satellite recording is not being executed, power is turned off to the broadcast satellite receiver also.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 1992Date of Patent: May 17, 1994Assignee: Sony CorporationInventor: Toshihide Hayashi

Patent number: 5249303Abstract: A system and process for continuous reception of information by a mobile receiver unit passing among a plurality of spaced transmitters with each transmitter configured to individually transmit signals to the mobile receiver unit. The mobile receiver unit has a pair of scanning receivers controlled by a switching control module. The module causes one of the scanning receivers to lock onto signals transmitted from one of the transmitters while causing the second scanning receiver to scan signals transmitted by the transmitters in the reception range of the scanning receiver. Once the strength of the signal locked onto by the first scanning receiver falls below a predetermined minimum signal strength, the second scanning receiver locks onto the best suited received signal and the first scanning receiver is caused to commence scanning, the roles of the scanning receivers thus being reversed.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 1991Date of Patent: September 28, 1993Inventor: John D. Patent number: 4914714Abstract: A portable radio communication apparatus includes a first antenna that can extend away from, or be retracted towards, an apparatus housing. The apparatus includes a second, usually flat antenna mounted within or around the outer periphery of the housing. When the first antenna is extended away from the housing, it is connected via a switch to a node, in turn, connected via respective filters to both a transmitter and a diversity receiver. At this time, the second antenna is connected to the diversity receiver via a respective filter. When the first antenna is sufficiently retracted towards the housing, a switch, mechanically coupled to the first antenna, disconnects the first antenna from the node, connects the second antenna to such node, and disconnects the second antenna from the diversity receiver.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1987Date of Patent: April 3, 1990Assignee: NEC CorporationInventor: Yoshiharu Tamura

Patent number: 4742563Abstract: A diversity reception of signals involves first and second mobile receivers which recover first and second baseband signals. The first and second receivers have first and second wave detectors, respectively, for generating output voltages corresponding to the strength of an FM modulated signal. When the difference in output voltages between the first and second detectors exceeds a predetermined value, a comparator gives an output detection signal. An adder circuit combines the first and second recovered baseband signals. First and second switching circuits selectively cut off the lower level one of the first or second recovered signal, which is then being supplied to the adder circuit. A third switching circuit adjusts the gain of the adder circuit. When the comparator does not give an output detection signal, the first and second switching circuits feed both the first and second recovered baseband signals to the adder circuit.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1986Date of Patent: May 3, 1988Assignee: NEC CorporationInventor: Yukio Fukumura
