Interference Signal Transmission (e.g., Jamming) Patents (Class 455/1)
  • Patent number: 8406425
Abstract: An approach is provided for minimizing co-channel interference in a communication system is disclosed. A header of a first frame is scrambled based on a first unique word. A header of a second frame is scrambled based on a second unique word. The first frame including the corresponding scrambled header and the second frame including the corresponding scrambled header are transmitted, respectively, over adjacent co-channels of the communication system. Each of the frames further includes a payload and a pilot block. The payload and the pilot block of the first frame are scrambled based on a first scrambling sequence. The payload and the pilot block of the second frame are scrambled based on a second scrambling sequence. The above arrangement is particularly suited to a digital satellite broadcast and interactive system.

Abstract: An intermediary between a remote control device and a remotely controllable device implements identification and/or authentication. The intermediary is, e.g., a node or set of nodes within a head end of a cable network service provider. A remote control device at a customer premise sends a command intended to control a remotely controllably device which is also located at the same customer premise. The customer premise includes a network interface, e.g., a cable modem, which has associated identification information. The command and the associated network interface identification information are communicated to the intermediary, e.g., via a cable modem. The intermediary accesses a subscriber record corresponding to the location based on the network interface identification information. The intermediary identifies the device to be controlled, e.g., a particular set top box and/or authenticates the remote control device. A command is sent via the network to the device to be controlled.

  • Patent number: 8391772
Abstract: Precision surgical jamming of a target located at a distance uses GPS to coherently focus the jamming energy transmitted from a plurality of nodes. One of the nodes is designated as a master node and the remaining nodes are designated as auxiliary nodes. Each node tracks the carrier phases of satellite signals transmitted by a plurality of GPS satellites relative to a carrier phase of a reference oscillator in the respective node. The master node provides the tracked phase measurements along with its position information to all of the auxiliary nodes. The auxiliary nodes determine the phase offset of its reference oscillator relative to the reference oscillator of the master node based on the transmitted data. The transmit phase of a jammer transmitter in each of the nodes is then aligned to the phase of the reference oscillator to transmit a coherent focused beam to a distant target.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for eliminating transmit echo spurs is provided. The method includes the steps of: estimating a distortion effect applied to a transmit signal by a duplexer stop band. Next, the contribution of a primary component of the spur is estimated. An image component of the spur is estimated after the primary contribution has been estimated. The transmit echo is then subtracted from the composite desired signal by digitally subtracting the distortion effect, the primary component of the spur, and the image component of the spur, producing the desired composite transmit signal without the transmit echo.

  • Patent number: 8355666
Abstract: In embodiments, an adaptive tone erasure technique is applied to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communications, such as ECMA-368 standard ultra-wideband (UWB) communications. A transmitter obtains jammed sub-carrier information and calculates an erasure mask. The jammed sub-carriers are nulled before transmitting to a receiver. In accordance with the erasure mask, bits falling on the jammed sub-carriers are replaced by erasure bits before interleaving, keeping the interleaver block size constant notwithstanding variations in the number of the jammed sub-carriers. The receiver also obtains the jammed sub-carrier information and the erasure mask. After the receiver deinterleaves the constant size blocks, it decodes the data without the erasure bits. The transmitter may detect the jammed sub-carriers itself, or obtain the information from the receiver. The receiver similarly may detect the jammed sub-carriers itself, or obtain the information from the transmitter.

Abstract: A method and system for operating a wireless access point is disclosed. In an embodiment, a wireless access point determines whether bursty interference is present within the operating range of the wireless access point and then adapts a transmission characteristic in response to the determination. In an embodiment, the wireless access point determines whether bursty interference is present by changing at least one transmission characteristic and monitoring the resulting error rates. The presence of bursty interference can be detected if a lowering of the transmission rate causes an increase in the error rate. The increase in the error rate is a result of the lower transmission rate and corresponding longer transmission time for each frame, which in turn increases the likelihood that a frame will overlap with bursty interference.

Abstract: A method for communication includes, in a transmitter that transmits one or more data streams to respective target receivers and one or more jamming streams for preventing the data streams from being decoded by eavesdropping receivers, holding a definition of at least first and second transmission modes having respective, different first and second levels of security in preventing the data streams from being decoded by the eavesdropping receivers. One of the first and second transmission modes is selected for transmitting a data stream to a target receiver, by evaluating a selection criterion. The data stream and the jamming streams are transmitted via an antenna array using the selected transmission mode.

  • Patent number: 8229344
Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for analyzing a wireless communications device. The techniques include, for instance, assessing vulnerability of the device, including its susceptibility to jamming, by applying one or more interfering signals to the device and observing the device's response. The techniques further include identifying one or more vulnerabilities that can be exploited in defeating malicious behavior involving use of the device (e.g., such as using the device for remote detonation of explosives). Applying one or more interfering signals to the device may include, for instance, applying a trigger signal and a jamming signal to the device, and adjusting the jamming signal until the trigger signal is rendered ineffective in acting as a trigger signal. Identifying one or more vulnerabilities that can be exploited in defeating malicious behavior may include, for instance, reporting parameters of the one or more interfering signals that result in defeating the malicious behavior.

Abstract: System(s) and method(s) are provided to regulate telecommunication service in a confined area in which telecommunication is restricted. Regulation includes control of wireless resources and access thereto, and monitoring wireless activity and locating sources thereof within the confined area. Regulation can be accomplished through networked femtocell access points and distributed antenna systems. Control of wireless resources is accomplished through selective jamming within the confined area; selective jamming can be updated based on performance metrics of telecommunication service. Configurable lists that authorize mobile device(s) to consume wireless service within the confined area control access to wireless resources. Access can be granted or denied statically or dynamically. Monitoring of wireless activity within the confined area includes tracking and recordation of signaling or traffic activity.

Abstract: Techniques for detecting wireless devices that are signaling in high proximity to a convoy or other operation and preventing messages from reaching the wireless devices. One class of the techniques uses surgical jamming methodologies that minimize power consumption and collateral interference, while being maximally inconspicuous; another class uses baiting beacons to prevent the messages from reaching the wireless devices. Still another class of techniques denies wireless devices access to a wireless network. An exemplary embodiment applies the techniques to wireless devices and beacons in a GSM network.

  • Patent number: 8214910
Abstract: The present disclosure presents techniques for determining when to obscure an accelerometer signal from an accelerometer of a mobile device. The techniques include determining whether a user has been prompted to provide sensitive input data to the mobile device using an input device of the mobile device. When the user has been prompted to provide sensitive input data, the technique includes obscuring a portion of an accelerometer signal outputted from an accelerometer, and receiving the sensitive input data from the user at the input device while the accelerometer signal is obscured. In some embodiments, the accelerometer signal can be obscured by (i) switching the accelerometer 216 off, (ii) inserting a random noise signal into the accelerometer signal, (iii) masking the low-order bits of the accelerometer signal, (iv) passing the accelerometer signal through a filter, (v) actuating a vibrator of the mobile device, and/or (vi) otherwise degrading the accelerometer signal.
