  • Patent number: 10390313
Abstract: In order to improve communication with another electronic device, during an advertising mode an electronic device (such as a smartphone) may transmit a packet with advertising information using a default transmit power level. Then, based on feedback about a performance metric associated with the communication from the other electronic device, the electronic device may selectively increase the transmit power level for a subsequent packet. Because this selective increase in the transmit power level may increase the overall power consumption, the change in the transmit power level also may depend on one or more factors, such as a battery power level of the electronic device. However, the selective increase in the transmit power level may, in some instances, decrease the overall power consumption by reducing or eliminating retries.

  • Patent number: 9253743
Abstract: Systems and methods are described for reducing latency and improving beacon reception by a device capable of providing multiple wireless interfaces via a single radio (a “multi-interface device”). The multi-interface device utilizes the single radio to communicate with a first device over a first wireless channel and to communicate with a second device over a second wireless channel. The multi-interface device determines that a difference in time between a transmission of a first beacon by the first device over the first wireless channel and a transmission of a second beacon by the second device over the second wireless channel is less than a predetermined amount of time. In response to determining that the difference in time is less than the predetermined amount of time, the multi-interface device sends a request to either the first or the second device to shift the transmission of future beacons by a requested offset time.

Abstract: A multi-mode communication device having a scan optimizer capable of prioritizing scan frequencies for different radio access technologies (RATs) during a network search. The scan frequency prioritization may be based on various network coverage considerations associated with RAT availability, RAT density within a region, geographic location, historic attachment for the multi-mode device, an operation mode of the multi-mode device, etc. The multimode device can utilize its scan optimizer to generate an optimized scan schedule to be employed for a limited duration during a network search to improve its likelihood of success in detecting and/or attaching to a network associated with a prioritized RAT. A default scan schedule having equal scan frequency prioritization can be employed by the multi-mode device at a time when the limited duration of the optimized scan schedule expires and no networks associated with a prioritized RAT have been acquired.

  • Patent number: 9241367
Abstract: Systems and methods for Wi-Fi roaming. A gateway supports both a local access point (AP) and a virtual AP. The local AP is accessible only to an “owner” of the gateway. The virtual AP (VAP) is accessible to devices associated with the owner of the gateway and to roaming Wi-Fi devices. A datastore conveys information about the roaming Wi-Fi devices to the VAP to permit them to access the VAP without the need for manual configuration of the VAP. A roaming Wi-Fi device may communicate with a gateway via a tunnel to maintain session connectivity during roaming. A session may be initiated on one network, such as a Wi-Fi network or a cellular network, handed off to another network, such as a cellular network or a Wi-Fi network, and then returned to the network on which the session was initiated.

Abstract: Determining a geo-location estimate of a mobile device determined based on detected radio transmitters needs to uniquely identify at least one of the visible cellular towers. The estimate may be improved if multiple cellular towers can be uniquely identified. However, mobile devices may not determine unique identifiers for each visible cellular tower based upon configuration of the cellular radio protocol stack implementation. It is possible to disambiguate non-unique parameters detected at a mobile device to unique IDs of the cellular towers to aid in geo-location. The disambiguation is accomplished using disambiguation information that is associated with the cellular tower the mobile device is currently camped on.

Abstract: Mobility of firewall rules for clients moving among bridge AP nodes in a wireless network. APs operate in bridge mode. A wireless client C is associated with a first AP. As part of that association, the first AP establishes and maintains personal firewall rules and state for client C. When wireless client C associates with a second AP in the L2 domain, the second AP sends session request to other APs. This may be in the form of a multicast message. Optionally, the second AP may send a unicast message to the first AP indicating that client C has associated with the second AP. APs receiving the multicast session request message for client C check their tables to see if they have stored firewall or other state for client C. APs having storied firewall or other state for client C send session response messages to the second AP containing stored firewall sessions and other state for client C. When the second AP receives a session response, it sends an acknowledgement to the AP which sent the response.

Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for creating and using imbedded Shortcodes. An imbedded Shortcode (ISC) and Shortcode may be uniquely associated with a full name that identifies an item of interest. The Shortcode may be visually identified when the full name is displayed by the ISC, which is select characters of the full name that are visually distinguished from the other characters of the full name. Thus, subsequent reference to the associated full name and its item of interest may be identified simply by using the Shortcode instead of the full name. For example, a user of an electronic device may observe the full name with the ISC in a visual display, and sequentially enter the characters of the Shortcode from the ISC into the electronic device to obtain additional information regarding the item of interest.
