  • Patent number: 5297996
Abstract: A rolling or convoluted boot for a constant velocity universal joint has at least one pressure balancing aperture (19, 19a) located in a pressure balancing region (13, 13a). When the shaft (12) is in a stationary position, the pressure balancing region (13) tightly adjoining the shaft (12), during shaft rotation, the pressure balancing region radially lifts off the shaft as a function of the speed or pressure differential. Thus, the boot balances pressure between the joint space and the surrounding atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 5273490
Abstract: An abrasion-resistant protective cover, in the form of a sock, fitting over a drive axle joint seal of a vehicle. The sock is formed of abrasion-resistant material to extend the operation of the seal by extending the amount of wear and tear that the seal can withstand. The sock may be pre-assembled about the joint seal during assembly of the drive axle shaft and joint. The sock is attached at one end to the drive axle shaft and at the opposite end to the joint. The sock may also be assembled about the joint seal after assembly of the drive axle shaft and joint. The sock is wrapped about the joint seal and held in place by clamps around the drive axle shaft and the joint. The sock may be fabricated with any one of several abrasion-resistant materials and may include a flexible material to allow the sock to be tightly fitted about the joint seal without limiting movement of the joint seal around the drive axle shaft.

  • Patent number: 4664393
Abstract: A sealing boot for sealing a power transmitting mechanical joint of the plunging type, especially a mechanical joint which is subject to angular articulation between its input member and output member. The mechanical joint has an outer member, and the outer member has an external cylindrical surface. The sealing boot has a semi-rigid or non-flexible segment which surrounds a portion of the cylindrical surface and this non-flexible segment has a cylindrical slot that sealingly and slidingly receives the cylindrical end portion of a second boot segment, which is also of semi-rigid or non-flexible character. The sliding action of the second boot segment in the first boot segment results from the plunging action of the joint. The second boot segment also has a slot at its other end and this slot slidingly and sealingly receives an end portion of a third boot segment. The third boot segment, in turn, seals to a member of the mechanical joint.

  • Patent number: 4597745
Abstract: Elastic or flexible protective bellows of a homokinetic transmission joint for a motor vehicle wheel, connected in a sealed manner to a bowl element 2 of the joint, comprising, when mounted on the joint, an active part constituted by two coaxial spherical segments 3, 4, one of which is outside the other, interconnected by a curved trough 5 and defining with the latter a U shape. The active part 3, 4 can extend by a lengthening of the segments, on one side, and a shortening, on the opposite side, when the joint pivots through a given angle. This joint has, in particular, the advantage of completely eliminating wear by abrasion between the inner surfaces of the joint, the active segments 3, 4 being indeed always separated by lubricant. Further, the many folds of conventional bellows are eliminated, which considerably simplifies the manufacture of the bellows.

  • Patent number: 4362520
Abstract: This invention is a heavy-duty flexible shaft that accommodates for misalignments between an input and output shaft. The flexible shaft is comprised of a multiplicity of hollow, individually fabricated, interfitting members housed in a tubular, bendable shaft. Each segment is intimately engaged, one within the other, yet the segments are so designed to allow for limited longitudinal movement while restricting circumferential movement between segments during torsional transmissions from the input to the output shafts.

  • Patent number: 4345772
Abstract: An elastomeric seal apparatus (16) having an inner annular terminating portion (36) which is attachable to a first (12) member, an outer annular terminating portion (38) which is attachable to a second (14) member, and an annular convoluted flexible portion (40) which is disposed between the inner (36) and outer (38) terminating portions and has an inner (46) and an outer (48) margin which are respectively joined thereto. The thickness of the convoluted flexible portion (40) decreases from the relatively thicker inner margin (46) to the relatively thinner outer margin (48) in proportion to a radial distance (H) extending from the inner margin (46) to the flexible portion (40). A concentrically inner convolution (42) and a concentrically outer convolution (44) constitute the flexible portion (40) and have a relatively small (R.sub.1) and a relatively large (R.sub.2) radius of curvature.

  • Patent number: 4335585
Abstract: A lawn trimmer has a tubular shaft assembly which structurally and drivingly connects an upper power head to a lower rotary tool head in a lawn-trimming tool. The assembly includes a bent portion to dispose its opposite ends at an angle to each other, and comprises an outer frame shaft of relatively large diameter and structural strength and an inner sheath tube of relatively smaller diameter formed of rigid but bendable tubing extending coaxially of the frame tube. The sheath tube is supported over the bent length of the assembly by a continuous semirigid bushing, and its lower end is held coaxial with the lower end of the frame tube by a substantially rigid bushing. The lower end of the frame tube, beyond such rigid bushing, is expanded to form a sleeve of enlarged diameter and predetermined length, and an arbor assembly is mounted in such sleeve and consists of a pair of ball bearings mounted by their inner races on the arbor and having their outer races supportingly received in the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4329857
Abstract: An improved coupler cover is provided for preventing foreign matter from contaminating the end surface of a female coupler. This improved coupler cover comprises two diaphragms axially aligned adjacent to each other. Each diaphragm contains a multiplicity of slits which extend outward from the center of the diaphragm to form equal size pie-shaped sections. The multiple slits of the first diaphragm are also offset in position from the multiple slits of the second disphragm. The two diaphragms are secured in a retainer which holds both of the diaphragms relative to the end surface of the coupler.

  • Patent number: RE33701
Abstract: A resilient boot assembly (10) of the type for containing a steering shaft (22) therein includes a tubular body portion (12) having a passageway (14) extending therethrough and first and second end portions (16,18). One end of the boot is adapted to attach to a steering gear housing (20). The assembly (10) is a unitary tubular member and includes at least one end having a resilient portion (24) and stiffened portions (26,28) at each end of the resilient portion for providing the flexible resilient portion (24) to roll up upon the body portion (12) to a retracted position to expose the connection between the steering shaft (22) and steering gear assembly and rolling down to an extended position to contain and perfect a seal with the steering gear housing (20).
