Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide improved overrunning pulleys that overcome one or more of the deficiencies in the prior art as discussed herein. Embodiments of the present invention provide pulleys that are “springy” in the torque direction, yet have a lower effective spring constant (e.g., are less stiff) over a greater angular range. Further, in at least some embodiments, the inventive pulleys use a low cost and simple torque transfer geometry. Further, in at least some embodiments, the inventive pulleys afford significant overrun. Further, in at least some embodiments, the inventive pulleys are radially small in an overall envelope, for example, in order to allow an alternator to reach its highest possible rotational speed, and thus output, during engine idle. Further, in at least some embodiments, the inventive pulleys are more durable, as they offer the aforementioned dynamics in both directions (torque and counter-torque).

An inside perimeter of the pulley portion and an outside perimeter of the hub portion are connected by the plurality of elastic structures absorbing vibrations in the perimeter direction and in the radial direction. The elastic structure has an annular member, and the annular member absorbs vibrations and torque fluctuations in the perimeter direction and in the radial direction transmitted from a rotation driving source such as a motor. • Patent number: 6045448
Abstract: A drive assembly couples a driving mechanism, e.g., an engine, and a driven mechanism, e.g., a generator, to one another. The assembly includes a transmission member having a plurality of inwardly projecting fingers and a coupling having a plurality of outwardly directed projections interdigitated with the fingers. The projections include first and second projections which define a notch between them. A finger extends into the notch, thereby forming first and second pockets between the finger and the first and second projections, respectively. In the improvement, the first and second resilient devices are received in the first and second pockets, respectively. Each resilient device includes at least one spur projecting from it to prevent substantial rotation of the device in its pocket. In a more specific embodiment, alternating pairs of resilient devices are made, respectively, of natural rubber for good shock absorption and Buna N for resisting the harmful effects of oil.

  • Patent number: 5931052
Abstract: An improved torsional vibration isolator assembly for an engine is provided which includes a non-linear spring device which effectively minimizes the transmission of torsional vibrations to the engine's gear train throughout all engine operating frequencies and conditions while limiting relative movement between the engine's crankshaft and crank gear so as to maintain timing error within acceptable limits. The improved torsional vibration isolator is designed to absorb torsional vibrations transmitted from the crankshaft so as to substantially isolate the entire engine gear train, including the crank gear, from the torsional vibrations throughout all engine operating conditions and frequencies, including at and below the natural frequency, i.e. crank resonance, of the crankshaft. The crank gear isolator includes resilient elements positioned in cavities formed between engaging projections formed on inner and outer rings of the assembly.

Abstract: The torsional flexible connection has two coaxial flanges or discs equipped with sets of equidistant radially or axially protruding blades which are interdigitated to form a plurality of wedge-shaped chambers whose sides intersect at the axis of the connection, all or some of which receive torque-transmitting flexible inserts which transmit force and rotation to one of the flanges/discs in response to the force and rotation transmitted from the other flange/disc or vice versa. Each insert is comprised of two or several elements of a streamlined shape placed at different distances from the axis, so that the dimensions of these elements in the direction of transmitted payload are proportional to their distances from the axis.

  • Patent number: 4795402
Abstract: A resilient shaft coupling having two metal parts that include an inner coupling ring and, coaxial thereto, an outer coupling ring. The facing generated surfaces of the rings are formed with a number of substantially radial cams or dogs which mesh with one another alternately in the circumferential direction and extend to near the pertaining opposite generated surface. Each two circumferentially consecutive cams or dogs form a pair whose adjacent surfaces are concave and delimit a chamber whose longitudinal axis extends parallel to the rotational axis of the coupling, and in which a resilient coupling member is disposed. The coupling members are radially biased or pre-loaded by a predetermined amount, and are secured to the generated surfaces of the inner and outer ring coupling rings. With the coupling in its rest position, gaps or spaces are present between each resilient coupling member and each cam or dog, and permit the members to deform freely and thus to be stressed in shear.
