Including Means To Receive Radially Spaced Axially Extending Projection On Drive And Driven Members Patents (Class 464/93)
  • Patent number: 6203434
Abstract: A joint for the angularly movable connection of two shafts with one another has flanges which are arranged on the shaft ends. Each of the flanges has three axially projecting driving pins which are connected with a hexagonal, elastically deformable joint ring. The joint ring, in turn, is formed in several parts by a collar of chain-link-type driving loops which can be swivelled on sockets at the corner points of the joint ring. For relieving the driving loops, one linear compression bar is also arranged in the interior of each driving loop. The compression bar has faces placed onto the sockets while transmitting force under load. The effective length of the compression bars is dimensioned such that the bars fill the clear space between two adjacent sockets only with play. The play is large enough so that the compression bars are placed in contact only after a defined basic load has been exceeded so that as the result of the load, the driving loops are elastically stretched to a defined degree.

Abstract: The present invention provides an eccentric shaft coupling having a high durability, capable of dealing with a great torque load and transmitting correctly rotational movement. Two pairs of protrusions of cylindrical boss flanges secured to extremities of two rotating shafts are linked through an intermediate disk with phases shifted by 90° from each other. The intermediate disk is made of a material having a satisfactory strength and rigidity. Each of the two pairs of protrusions is put slidably between plane portions of two liners, each having a partial cylindrical shape, whose cross section is enclosed by an arc and a secant, inserted dismountably into a cylindrical cavity along inner walls to be guided. Only the liners, each having a partial cylindrical shape, whose cross section is enclosed by an arc and a secant, are subjected to strong wear and therefore, when they are worn, they can be easily exchanged.

  • Patent number: 6176784
Abstract: A cardan-type joint has flanges which are arranged on mutually facing shaft ends and preferably have three axially projecting driving pins, respectively, which are mutually staggered and uniformly arranged on the circumference of a common graduated circle. The driving pins are connected with one another in a torsion-proof manner by a flexible joint ring which is provided in corner points with sockets for the driving pins. The multi-part joint ring is formed by a collar of several oval driving loops. Each of the driving loops winds around two adjacent sockets. In order to easily permit relatively large bending angles during rotation, even in the event of a high mechanical and thermal loading of the cardan-type joint, the oval driving loops are indirectly or directly swivellably disposed on the driving pins by a pair of contact surfaces which are round in a meridian section in an axially slidable manner on the socket or on the driving loop.

  • Patent number: 5928083
Abstract: In accordance with the teachings of the present invention, a flexible coupling assembly installed between a driving member and a driven machine or device. The flexible coupling assembly includes a one-way over-running clutch mechanism incorporated therein and transfers torque from the driving member to the driven device, while compensating for any angular and offset misalignment between two coupling members. The clutch mechanism provides driving torque in one rotational direction and over-running capability in the other, thereby accommodating large torque fluctuations from the driving member. This clutch mechanism is integrated within an intermediate housing assembly that is easily coupled between two jaw-type shaft couplings. Because the present invention eliminates the need for an intermediate shaft between the flexible coupling and a separate clutch mechanism, it further simplifies the installation of the assembly while reducing the overall space required.

  • Patent number: 4802881
Abstract: A coupling member for taking up torque in a vehicle steering column to absorb vibration and vehicle body misalignment, the coupling member including a plastics disc with a pair of diametrically opposed bosses which protrude further from one face of the disc than from the other face, and another pair of diametrically opposed bosses which protrude further from the other face of the disc than from its one face. The disc is able to distort upon application of torque through the bosses by means of a cut-out portion between each adjacent boss. A fail-safe deflection plate can be provided on each face of the disc to react against opposed pairs of bosses in the event of high application of torque. An adaptor piece holding one end of a steering column is fitted to one face of the disc and a splined flange is secured to the other face of the disc to enable the coupling member to be secured to another steering column component.

  • Patent number: 4702722
Abstract: A universal joint yoke is obtained from a flat blank of sheet metal whose general shape is that of a cruciate form having a circular base and two diametrically opposing small semielliptical extensions. The blank of sheet metal is pressed in a forming apparatus so that the two extensions are bent perpendicularly to the circular base in the same direction with a given angle with respect to the circular base and two ribs or contiguous rib are formed along axes of bending to prevent a springback action of the two extensions which constitute two ear portions of the finished yoke. In addition, recesses are extended along a rear surface(s) of the rib(s) so that fasteners such as bolts and nuts for fastening a rubber coupling constituting a lower joint to a lower shaft of a steering system is nestled into the respective recesses. Both ends of the circular base have holes through which the fasteners for fastening the universal joint yoke to the rubber coupling is inserted.

  • Patent number: 4617884
Abstract: An apparatus and method by which possibly destructive stress of torsional vibration in a rotating crankshaft/flywheel system of a multicylinder internal combustion engine is avoided by effectively isolating the flywheel from the crankshaft for torsional vibration considerations. The flywheel and crankshaft are coupled by a resilient coupling which accommodates angular movement between the components and which has a torsional spring rate which is relatively low compared to the torsional spring rate of a conventional crankshaft/flywheel system. The coupling reduces the natural frequency of torsional vibration of the system to a frequency well below the normal operating range of the engine in terms of revolutions per minute, thereby substantially eliminating the effects of torsional vibration in the normal operating range of the engine.

  • Patent number: 4428738
Abstract: A rotary coupling device comprises driving and driven elements which are rotatable about a given axis. A coupling member of elastomeric material rotatable about the aforesaid axis is interposed between such elements for imparting rotary motion therebetween. The coupling member is connected at spaced circumferential points to the driving and driven elements, respectively, and is so constructed as to have two different torque characteristics, the first being resilient in a range of torques varying from zero up to a predetermined value and the second being relatively non-yielding for torque values higher than such predetermined maximum. The imposition of torques above said predetermined value results in substantially direct drive between such elements and those below said value results in a resiliently flexible drive therebetween.
