  • Patent number: 6248020
Abstract: A fastener forming apparatus comprises a positive stop that prevents workpieces from overshooting the end of a forming stroke. A workpiece transfer mechanism transfers one unformed workpiece at a time into a workpiece gripper and drives completed workpieces out of the workpiece gripper and onto an exit path. A compound hydro-pneumatic cylinder moves the gripper and one workpiece at a time downward on a forming stroke into contact with a rotating forming tool. A limit switch causes the reciprocator to reverse direction at the end of the forming stroke. The forming tool includes a tool adapter head that holds various forming implements such as cutting blades or drill bits. In one embodiment the forming tool is a groover apparatus that cuts circumferential grooves around fasteners. In this embodiment, the lower limit switch signals a controller to hold the reciprocator at the end of the forming stroke while the groover forms the groove.

  • Patent number: 6089986
Abstract: A header die for forming a self-tapping fastener blank provides die forming zones within which the blank is formed, the blank therby defining an odd number of lobes along a cross section taken perpendicular to its axis of rotation. The lobes define a relatively high out-of-round cross section along a tapered thread-forming zone, and a relatively low out-of-round cross section along the main body taken in a direction toward the drive head. Between the main body and tapered thread-forming zone is located an additional thread forming zone having an axial length of approximately one thread pitch and a cross section that conforms to the high out-of-round of the tapered zone. The maximum diameter (at the lobes) of the additional thread-forming section approximately matches that of the full-diameter main body section. A lower-diameter stabilizing section can be provided ahead of the tapered zone, adjacent the tip of the fastener.

  • Patent number: 5904623
Abstract: An apparatus for forming a slot in a semi-product of a bolt prior to thread formation includes a punch and a die mechanism. The die mechanism includes a tubular member, and an elongated die member formed integrally with a slot-forming plate which is located at a front end portion thereof and which has a uniform-thickness flat middle portion and two side portions that are wider than the middle portion. The semi-product can be compressed between the punch and the slot-forming plate of the die member in a central bore in a high-hardness block, which is fixed in the tubular member, to form the slot. Accordingly, the slot has a uniform-width middle portion and two end portions which are wider than the uniform-width middle portion. When threads are formed on the semi-product by means of a lathe, no projections are created in the uniform-width middle portion of the slot, thereby permitting a wedge-shaped end of a screwdriver to engage fittingly the uniform-width middle portion of the slot.
