  • Patent number: 10384106
Abstract: A ball bat includes a first bat portion (such as a barrel portion) and a second bat portion (such as a handle). The portions may be spaced apart along the bat's longitudinal axis. A joint connects the first and second bat portions. The joint may be positioned at or near, or centered about, a location of maximum vibration, such as an antinode of the bat. The joint may include a filler material (such as an elastomeric material) at least partially surrounding a rod element. The filler material and the rod element may span a gap between the first and second bat portions. The filler material and the rod element may extend into the first bat portion or the second bat portion. A cover material may be positioned around the filler material. The joint may form a structural link between the bat portions and it may be configured to absorb vibration.

Abstract: A method of making a ball bat may include forming a bat frame with a handle and an inner barrel structure, providing spacer elements extending radially outwardly from the inner barrel structure, and forming a barrel shell having a main barrel and a tapered section. An inner diameter in the tapered section may be equal to an outer diameter of a first one of the spacer elements. The method may include mechanically locking the barrel shell to the bat frame by passing the handle through the barrel shell and moving the barrel shell toward the inner barrel structure until the barrel shell contacts the first one of the spacer elements. A gap is maintained between an outer diameter of the inner barrel structure and the barrel shell. The barrel shell may deflect during a hit to create a trampoline effect, while the inner barrel structure limits the deflection.

Abstract: A bat has a barrel with a multi-wall construction. The handle can be formed integrally with the inner wall. A damping device can be installed between the handle and the outer wall of the barrel. The damping device can dampen vibrations transmitted from the outer wall to the handle. The damping device can also separate the outer wall from the inner wall adjacent the handle section. The inner and outer walls can be bonded together adjacent the end of the bat. Alternatively, the inner and outer walls can be entirely free of bonding to one another. Additionally, a damping device can separate the outer wall from the inner wall adjacent the end of the bat. Furthermore, the bat can include a pair of damping devices that separate the inner wall from the outer wall both adjacent the handle section and at the end of the bat.

Abstract: A vibration isolation system for hand implements including sporting equipment and tools to substantially reduce impact forces from being delivered to the user's hands. Isolation elements provide low spring rates enabling the system to isolate bending vibration, recoil, and twist. An outer shell member substantially encircles the grip end of the hand implement and is spaced outwardly thereto allowing the grip end to freely deflect within the outer shell member.

Abstract: A shaft of a cue stick for billiards or pool, includes an elongated tapered body laminated of a plurality of wood strips, each of the wood strips in cross-section having a sector section with an arcuate outer surface and an arc inner notch such that when the wood strips are laminated together, the arcuate outer surfaces form an outer surface of the body and the inner notches define an axial hole through the body; and a circular core tube made of a material having a greater rigidity than wood and having a shorter length than the axial hole, the tube being firmly received in the axial hole in such a way that the cue sticks body has a front hollow section extending a predetermined length along its axis from larger diameter to the smaller diameter end.

Abstract: A sporting good item or other product includes a “shrink-label” formed from a shrink-sleeve, shrink-wrap, or a stretch-sleeve adhered to or otherwise affixed to an outer surface of the item. The shrink-label includes pre-printed graphics and closely conforms to the item's outer surface, including any contours or tapered regions, so that the graphics may be displayed anywhere on the item. The shrink-label may optionally be applied to the item via an automated device. A clear coat or other protective layer may optionally be applied to an outer surface of the shrink-label to increase its durability and resistance to abrasion, which is particularly beneficial when the shrink-label is applied to an item intended for impact applications, such as a ball bat.
