Abstract: In a ring-type tensioner, a resilient ring that cooperates with external grooves formed on a plunger to restrict retracting movement of the plunger in a tensioner housing, is formed with manipulation parts that extend through a cut-out portion in the housing and have bulged portions that are spaced by gaps from opposed walls of the cut-out portions. A rod-shaped tool inserted into one of the gaps cooperates with the bulged portion and the wall on opposite sides of the gap to expand the ring. The manipulation parts can be formed with tool-holding portions.

  • Patent number: 9080641
Abstract: In a tensioner having a housing and a plunger protruding in an advancing direction from a plunger-accommodating hole formed in the housing. The plunger has a cylindrical outer wall for sliding contact with the wall of the plunger-accommodating hole, and a tapered the rear end wall. A small clearance between the cylindrical outer wall of the plunger and the wall of the plunger-accommodating hole allows the plunger to become inclined by a small amount, which increases as the plunger advances. The angle of the taper at a boundary where the end wall meets the cylindrical outer wall is substantially equal to the maximum inclination of the plunger when the plunger is in its fully advanced condition.

Abstract: An apparatus (10) for imparting tension to multiple strands of an endless power transferring member loop (12) encircling a drive sprocket (14) and at least one driven sprocket (16a, 16b). Two tensioning arms (18a, 18b) are spaced apart and have guided movement relative to at least one fixed pin (26), and support inwardly facing shoes (20a, 20b) with power-transferring-member-sliding faces (22a, 22b). A link assembly (60) includes at least two link members (32a, 32b) pivotally connected to one another at respective first ends (40a, 40b). The connected first ends (40a, 40b) are constrained for limited movement along a fixed slot (36) extending generally along a centerline of the power transferring member loop (12) between the drive sprocket (14) and the driven sprockets (16a, 16b). The link members (32a, 32b) are pivotally connected individually to opposite ends of the two spaced apart tensioning arms (18a, 18b) at second locations (42a, 42b).

Abstract: A tensioner for an engine accessory drive system includes a tensioner arm pivotally mounted for movement between a free arm position and a load stop position. The tensioner arm includes a pulley which engages a belt. A piston, disposed in a cylinder, is pivotally linked to the tensioner arm. A spring urges the tensioner arm towards the free arm position. A moveable load stop member, controlled by an actuator, projects into the cylinder. The load stop member abuts the piston to thereby arrest movement of the tensioner arm and define the load stop position. The actuator may drive the load stop member against the piston to move the tensioner arm towards the free arm position so as to increase belt tension.

Abstract: Aspects of the present invention generally provide tensioner for varying tension applied to a continuous drive member based on temperature changes. In one embodiment, a temperature compensating chain tensioner is provided. The temperature compensating chain tensioner includes a fixed support member, a first idler sprocket coupled to the fixed support member, a support arm having a proximal end pivotably coupled to the fixed support member, a second idler sprocket coupled to a distal end of the support arm, and a spring form coupled intermediate of the fixed support member and the support arm, wherein the spring form has a spring constant that increases with increasing temperature, which causes the distal end of the support arm to move relative to the fixed support member.

Abstract: A tensioner for a chain or similar power transmission medium comprises a spring-biased plunger having annular rack teeth with gradually sloping forward surfaces and steeper rearward surfaces. The teeth are engaged by radially movable balls received in inclined grooves in an axially movable annular ball seat disposed in an annular groove formed in the wall of a plunger-accommodating hole in a tensioner housing. The bottoms of the inclined grooves face a steep rearward surface of a rack tooth, and the annular ball seat is axially movable in the annular groove and biased in the plunger protruding direction by a spring that exerts a biasing force greater than the biasing force exerted on the plunger. The balls and the movable annular ball seat block retraction of the plunger on engine start-up, but permit retraction when excessive force is imparted to the plunger while the plunger is in a protruding condition.
