Spring Biased In Belt-tensioning Direction Patents (Class 474/117)
  • Patent number: 6458055
Abstract: A belt tensioner mounted on mounting structure in normal and reverse modes which comprises a hub structure. An arm structure is pivotally mounted on the hub structure for pivotal movements with respect thereto about a pivot axis central to the hub structure between first and second limiting positions. A belt-engaging pulley is rotatably mounted on the arm structure for rotational movement about a rotational axis parallel with the pivotal axis. A spring system is provided for resiliently biasing the arm structure away from the first limiting position and toward the second limiting position. The hub structure includes a central opening extending axially therethrough configured to allow a mounting bolt to extend therethrough and into secured relation to the mounting structure. The hub structure includes a normal mode mounting plate on one axial end thereof which engages the mounting structure when the mounting bolt is secured therein as aforesaid.

Abstract: A combination starter-generator system for use in a vehicle is provided. The vehicle has an internal combustion engine and a battery. The system includes a starter-generator electrically coupled to the battery to generate a current and to start the internal combustion engine. A drive mechanism connects the starter-generator machine and the internal combustion engine. The starter-generator machine generates the current by receiving a charging torque from one side of the drive mechanism and starts the internal combustion engine by imparting a starting torque to a different side of the drive mechanism. The charging torque or the starting torque is a greater torque. A passive tensioning system cooperates with the drive mechanism to tension the drive mechanism only at the side of the greater torque.

Abstract: An auto tensioner comprises a rocking member the base end portion of which is supported by a fixed shaft so that it can rock freely, and on the tip end portion of which there is a pulley that is freely rotatably supported, a torsional coil spring for applying a resilient force in the rotational direction to the rocking member so that it pushes the pulley onto the belt, a damper device located between the rocking member and a fixed projection located in a base member wherein when the rocking member is turned by the resilient force of the torsion coil spring, the bottom of the damper device and the projection supported by the base member are separated so as to move the pulley quickly, and when the rocking member is turned in the opposite direction, the rocking arm pushes the top end of the damper device, so that the pulley is displaced slowly by the movement of the damper device whereby it does not require much space, and so that it can effectively do away with slack in the belt.

  • Patent number: 5277664
Abstract: A hydraulic tensioner having a plunger slidably fitted in a mounting cavity n a housing and biased in a protruding direction by a spring and fluid. A variable orifice check valve permits fluid to only flow into, and thereby protrude the plunger, but not out of the mounting cavity is disclosed. The variable orifice check valve is accomplished with a cylindrical compression spring in which the spring coils are normally mutually contacting and which has a top spring cap molded directly to an end of the spring and a bottom spring retainer molded directly to the opposite end of the spring. Such a construction reliably secures the top spring cap and bottom spring retainer to the spring. A mechanical no-return capability is provided to the plunger through an internal ratchet positioned within the mounting cavity and constructed from a cylinder having two helical openings which the plunger engages when the plunger experiences sufficient force to be pushed inwardly.

Abstract: An apparatus for transporting and tracking a belt arranged to move in a predetermined path and controlling lateral movement of the belt from the predetermined path includes a stationary non-rotating arcuate tracking shoe with a belt defining surface for supporting a belt including vertically oriented flanges at each side of said path defining surface and extending from said path defining surface outwardly to provide belt edge guides. An unconstrained slip belt is positioned between the tracking shoe and the belt. When driving the belt around the tracking shoe the velocity of the belt in the axial direction of the tracking shoe is zero when the belt touches an edge guide. Therefore, the friction force acting on the belt from the tracking shoe in the axial direction approaches zero, which helps to keep the total system force applied at the edge guide less than the minimum force necessary to produce buckling of the side of the belt.
