Abstract: A synchronous belt drive, with a high multiplication ratio for transforming a rotary movement into a translation or rotary movement, has at least two rows of teeth with different pitches interconnected by a toothed belt. The rows of teeth with different pitches engage wheels of at least one pair of wheels secured against independent rotation. The products of the number of teeth of the wheels and the pitch of the corresponding row of teeth differ at least slightly from each other. The pitch difference between the toothed belts gives the drive a high multiplication ratio. Very fine gradations and therefore high multiplication ratios may be achieved, even when the tooth modulus is high for reasons of resistance.

Abstract: A power transfer system is disclosed having a drop box for connecting a motor vehicle's drivetrain to an offset driveline. The drop box has an input that is angled relative to its output by means of a constant velocity (CV) universal joint. A CV joint drivingly interconnects the second rotary member to the first rotary member. The drop box also includes a third rotary member adapted for connection to the driveline and which is supported for rotation about a third rotary axis that is offset from the second rotary axis. • Patent number: 4601684
Abstract: A belt-drive assembly for use on air-moving systems in corrosive atmospheres comprising a larger non-metallic driven sheave in conjunction with a smaller metallic driver sheave wherein the metallic sheave may be located in a vented enclosure is disclosed. This arrangement prevents corrosion of the drive system and prolongs belt life.

  • Patent number: 4589859
Abstract: A continuously variable transmission for a vehicle (FIG. 1) has a drive pulley (4), a driven pulley (11), and a tension pulley (19) each having a pair of axially spaced rotors. The opposed inner faces of the rotors of each pulley are formed with slopes which have gradients with respect to the respective axis of rotation increasing continuously in proportion to the radii of the faces. A plurality of belts made up of thin bands (22a, 22b, 22c) run on the three pulleys (4, 11, 19) such that the respective band edges are in contact with the respective slopes of the three pulleys. The distances between the respective slopes of the drive and driven pulleys are variable, so that the rotating speed ratio between the drive and driven pulleys can be varied by varying the contacting radii of the belts with the drive and driven pulleys, while uniform tension is imparted to the belts by the tension pulley.

  • Patent number: 4568319
Abstract: A paper folder is disclosed, in which a drive motor and a crank mechanism supplied with power from the motor are not directly coupled together. Instead, they are secured to a common plate such that their respective shafts penetrate the common plate in a suitably spaced-apart relation to one another and coupled together by a belt. An adjusting screw mechanism is assembled in the crank mechanism to permit easy and accurate adjustment of the position of the paper folding knife. The device thus can be constructed as a belt drive unit type device, which produces less noise and is subject to less wear.

  • Patent number: 4553951
Abstract: In a belt and pulley system wherein motion is transferred between the two members, the belt is a metal belt having a pulley engaging face made of a relatively soft material and the pulley is one having a regular pattern of small hard protuberances, such as formed by knurling, on its belt engaging face which press into the soft metal of the belt to form permanent depressions arranged in a matching pattern which mesh with the protuberances to provide a positive slip-free motion transfer. The belt and pulley drive may be used advantageously in a device such as an X-Y plotter for accurately positioning, with good repeatibility and fine resolution, an associated member driven in one coordinate direction by the metal belt driven in turn by the knurled pulley.

  • Patent number: 4509936
Abstract: A toothed belt drive which is particularly suitable for use in harvesting machines has belt teeth which are trapezoidal in plan and cross-section perpendicular to the direction of motion of the belt. The belt teeth are alternately oriented with the larger side edge of the base adjacent opposite side edges of the strip-like belt. The belt teeth are adapted to engage in recesses in a belt pulley which are complementarily shaped. The recesses in the belt pulley are laterally open adjacent the wider side edge to enable any foreign matter entering said recesses to be readily ejected therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4506522
Abstract: An air conditioner refrigerant compressor driving and mounting apparatus for a helicopter of the type having a free rotating power output shaft, which rotates within a power take-off pad includes a compressor drive assembly drive shaft housing supported by the power take-off pad. A compressor drive assembly drive shaft is connected with the engine power output shaft, extends linearly through the compressor drive assembly housing, and is supported therein by bearing means. A compressor drive assembly drive shaft pulley is attached to the compressor drive assembly drive shaft and rotated thereby. Bracket means are provided for mounting an air conditioner refrigerant compressor on an outer surface of the compressor drive assembly housing such that a compressor drive shaft for driving the compressor is generally parallel with the compressor drive assembly drive shaft. A compressor pulley is attached to the compressor drive shaft and generally aligned with the compressor drive assembly drive shaft pulley.

  • Patent number: 4502233
Abstract: In taking dial indicator readings as a part of the so-called "reverse indicator" shaft alignment procedure for a turbine-to-compressor drive, the high breakaway torque necessary to initiate rotation of the turbine shaft is supplied by connecting such shaft to power drive means through a power chain. In this manner the turbine shaft may be quickly rotated in small, precisely controllable increments without overshoot, thus saving valuable time otherwise wasted in performing this function manually. Tapered, hollow alignment brackets minimize "bracket sag".

A pair of guide plates provided on both outer sides of either the gear member or floating member prevent lateral disengagement of the floating member from the gear member. A pair of seal rings arranged between the inner sides of the guide plates and the outer sides of either the floating member or gear member prevent entry of dust or the like foreign material into a substantially closed space between the teeth of the gear member and the floating member, to thereby improve the durability of the mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4457269
Abstract: An engine camshaft is driven from the crankshaft through a timing chain such that the chain has a taut side and a slack side. A second chain is drive connected between the crankshaft and a sprocket member which is maintained on the camshaft by a one-way device. The second chain has a taut side and a slack side opposite the corresponding sides of the primary timing chain. During the engine operating cycle, a torque reversal occurs at the camshaft. The second chain prevents the torque reversal from loosening or overrunning the taut side of the primary timing chain. The one-way device permits adjustment of the primary timing chain due to wear while maintaining the taut side of the second chain.

  • Patent number: 4449988
Abstract: A surface grinding machine wherein a tool holder is mounted on an upright feed screw which is in mesh with a rotary spindle nut. The latter is held against axial movement in the column of the grinding machine and is normally driven by a torque transmitting unit having an endless toothed belt trained over a first pulley which is coaxial with the nut and a second pulley mounted on the output shaft of an electric motor. A gear train is installed in parallel with the torque transmitting unit to prevent automatic lowering of the tool holder when the belt breaks. The gear train has a first gear coaxial with the first pulley, a second gear coaxial with the second pulley and an additional gear meshing with the first and second gears. The tension of the belt is monitored by a detector which transmits a signal when the belt breaks, and such signal is used to immediately arrest the motor.

  • Patent number: 4351637
Abstract: A precision roller chain with parallel runs and with an even number of links is trained around a sprocket wheel and an idler wheel and is driven around a racetrack-shaped path. To compensate for the inherent tendency of the chain to tighten and loosen in a cyclic manner, the idler wheel is formed with a smooth periphery and has a somewhat smaller diameter than the effective diameter of the sprocket wheel. In addition, compensating ramps hold the chain outwardly away from the idler wheel adjacent the tangency points of the idler wheel and keep the chain tight when the rollers of the chain are in angular positions which otherwise would cause the chain to inherently loosen.
