The pedals move alternatively back and forth pulling the cables and unwinding (active phase) their corresponding helicoids and thus transferring spinning motion to the shaft. The helicoids act as a set of sprockets of continuous variable radius optimizing the ergonomic delivery of leg power to the shaft. A step-less shifting system alters the length of cable wound in the helicoids and can manually select the “zone” of the helicoids utilized for optimal power transmission. • Publication number: 20080032835
Abstract: A multiple sprocket chain guide includes a guide structure mounted onto the movable metal cage of a conventional front bicycle derailleur such that the entire guide structure moves between inner and outer gear positions with the movable cage. The guide structure includes opposing outer and inner guide plates and a bridge that is rigidly connected between the guide plates to define a chain guide channel for directing the bicycle's chain onto a selected front sprocket. When the derailleur is positioned to guide the chain onto the outer front sprocket, the outer guide plate is positioned over the outer bash guard such that a gap there between is smaller than the height of the chain, thereby preventing derailment. When the derailleur is positioned to guide the chain onto the inner front sprocket, the inner guide plate is positioned over an inner plate to prevent derailment in a similar manner.

  • Patent number: 7326137
Abstract: The invention relates to a compact installation gear with, for instance, a ?? derailleur chain and a derailleur for setting a transmission ratio between a crankshaft and a rear hub of a bicycle. To that end, the gear comprises a compact housing with the crankshaft included therein, with a slidable driving first sprocket engaging, via the derailleur chain, a selected second sprocket which forms part of a series of second sprockets mutually different in diameter, located on a secondary shaft with a third sprocket mounted thereon outside the housing, which, in turn, via a roller chain, drives a fourth sprocket on the rear hub. The transmission ratio can be set with the aid of the derailleur by moving the derailleur chain over the different second sprockets while at the same time moving the driving first sprocket to a position directly opposite the selected second sprocket.

  • Patent number: 7306531
Abstract: An electric derailleur has a motor unit having a derailleur motor with an output shaft, a position control mechanism and a controller. The output shaft is rotated through a moveable range including a first derailleur shift position and a second derailleur shift position. The position control mechanism is configured and arranged to provide a position signal indicative of an angular position of the output shaft. The controller detects a predetermined lockup position of the derailleur motor occurring at one of the first and second derailleur shift positions. The controller also sets a predetermined stop position for the derailleur motor that is calculated distance prior to the lockup position based on the position signal of the position control mechanism. Thus, the derailleur motor can be calibrated such that a new stop position is set that prevents an overcurrent from occurring in the motor.
