Abstract: The family of transmissions has a plurality of members that can be utilized in powertrains to provide at least seven forward speed ratios and one reverse speed ratio. The transmission family members include three planetary gear sets having six torque-transmitting mechanisms and one fixed interconnection. Also, one planetary gear member is continuously connected with the transmission housing. The powertrain includes an engine and torque converter that is continuously connected to one of the planetary gear members and an output member that is continuously connected with another one of the planetary gear members. The six torque-transmitting mechanisms provide interconnections between various gear members and with the transmission housing, and are operated in combinations of three to establish at least seven forward speed ratios and one reverse speed ratio.

Abstract: A speed-reducing gear unit is provided for causing a reduced-speed rotation output member to have a reduced rotation that is slower than rotation of an input shaft. The reduced-speed rotation output member is switched between a reduced-speed rotation state and a free rotation state by rotation state switching means. The reduced-speed rotation of the reduced-speed rotation output member is selectively transferred to fourth and first elements of a speed-changing dual planetary gear unit via first and third control clutches. The rotation of the input shaft is transferred to a second element via a second control clutch. Rotations of the first and second elements are selectively restricted by first and second control brakes. A third element is connected to an output shaft.

  • Patent number: 4985011
Abstract: An automatic transmission including gear trains, which are constructed of at least three planetary gear sets each having three rotating members. A first clutch is arranged closer to an input shaft than the first planetary gear set for connecting any one of the rotating members of the first planetary gear set arranged adjacent to the input shaft. A second clutch is also arranged closer to the input shaft than the first planetary gear set for connecting another of the rotating members of the first planetary gear set and the input shaft. A third clutch is interposed between the first planetary gear set and the second planetary gear set for connecting any one of the rotating members of the second planetary gear set arranged at the opposite side to the input shaft across the first planetary gear set and the any one or the another of the rotating members of either one of the first clutch and the second clutch or the first planetary gear set.

  • Patent number: 4976670
Abstract: A power transmission has a planetary gear arrangement controlled by a plurality of selectively engageable clutches and brakes to provide forward and reverse speed ratios. A selectively operable input gear arrangement is utilized to establish a negative ratio of substantially 1:1 between the transmission input and the planetary gear arrangement. The selective use of the negative ratio input permits substantially equal forward and reverse drive ratios. The negative ratio input arrangement also permits extended coverage when employed with some of the other forward ratios established by the planetary gear arrangement.

  • Patent number: 4939955
Abstract: A planetary gearing for an automatic transmission comprises a main and auxiliary planetary gearings which are operatively coupled with each other. The auxiliary planetary gearing has a reduction drive state and a direct drive state and it shifts from the reduction drive state thereof to the direct drive state thereof when the main planetary gearing state has shifted up to the n-1 speed state thereof, where n is an integer not less than four. The main planetary gearing has n forward speeds.
