Plate Clutch Patents (Class 475/316)
  • Patent number: 7172528
Abstract: A transfer case for a vehicle that includes a planetary gear assembly, a clutch pack assembly, and a band and drum assembly that provide an overdrive or underdrive and direct drive in combination with a vehicle transmission. In one embodiment, an input shaft drives an outer ring gear of the planetary gear assembly and is coupled to one set of discs of the clutch assembly. A carrier of the planetary gear assembly is coupled to a rear output shaft, where the carrier supports a plurality of pinion gears. A sun gear of the planetary gear assembly is coupled to another set of discs of the clutch assembly that are coupled to the drum. When the clutch assembly is engaged, the ring gear is coupled to the sun gear for direct drive and when the band is engaged, the pinion gears and the ring gear provide underdrive.

  • Patent number: 7090608
Abstract: A wheel transmission for a heavy construction vehicle, which can be applied to specially-equipped vehicles as well as heavy construction vehicles such as a forklift truck and a mechanical shovel. The wheel transmission (200) is intended to drive a pair of right and left wheels independently, and includes a planetary gear assembly (210), a change clutch part (230), a one-way clutch part (300), and a brake part (270) housed in an axle hub at which opposite ends of a drive axle shaft are located, turning force from an engine of a heavy construction vehicle being transferred to the drive axle shaft through a torque converter, a driving shaft, a final reduction gear and a differential gear.

  • Patent number: 6830526
Abstract: A transmission is provided having a sun gear, ring gear and planet carrier mounted in a housing. A plurality of planet gears are rotatably mounted to the planet carrier. The planet carrier is connected to one of either an input shaft or an output shaft while the ring gear is connected to the other of either the input shaft or output shaft. A clutch engageably and disengageably couples the sun gear for rotation with one of the input or output shafts to which the planet carrier is coupled. A brake engageably and disengageably fixes the sun gear against rotation relative to the housing. A hydraulically engaged/spring disengaged non-rotating piston is mounted in the housing and is slidable in response to fluid pressure between an engaged position for engaging one of the clutch and the brake and a retracted position for disengaging the one of the clutch and the brake.

  • Patent number: 6027424
Abstract: A short boat motor transmission is presented that is less than five inches wide. The main parts of the transmission includes a high clutch drum which contains a Belleville spring, an input ring gear and clutch plates secured at the top by a pressure containment ring and snap-ring. The input ring gear is connected directly to the motor. This ring gear is also connected to a pinion carrier and four pinion planetary gears. The output shaft of the transmission is attached to the pinion carrier. The planetary gears in the pinion carrier are connected to the inner teeth of the input ring gear and to a sun gear. The outer part of the pinion carrier may also be mechanically connected in locked position to the input ring gear by clutch plates. The sun gear is connected to a one-way locking mechanism which only allows the gear to turn in one direction. Since all of the centers of the various parts are in alignment and since the various parts are nested the transmission is very short.

  • Patent number: 5538482
Abstract: In a powertrain, including a multiple-speed transmission, an axle shaft driven through differential mechanism, a two-speed axle mechanism includes an input shaft connected to the drive shaft, a multiple speed gear mechanism driveably connected to the differential mechanism. One form of the two-speed axle includes a planetary gearset, an overrunning brake, a brake band, and a friction clutch. Another form of the axle mechanism includes gears formed on the input shaft and output shaft, a planet gear wheel rotatably supported on a carrier, the gears of the wheel meshing with the gears on the shafts. A spring-applied clutch connects the output shaft to the carrier, and an hydraulically-actuated brake releases the clutch and holds the carrier against revolution on a casing.

  • Patent number: 5509864
Abstract: A friction torque establishing device and a ring gear are assembled with a positioner ring between a housing of the torque establishing device and the ring gear. The positioner ring has a split sleeve with a living hinge portion which permits the assembly of the ring between the housing and a toothed portion of the ring gear along a hub member. The sleeve also has locator pins and a latch mechanism integrally formed therewith to assure proper location relative to the gear and for latching the ring gear on the hub after assembly.

  • Patent number: 5507704
Abstract: A combined powershift transmission and main clutch assembly for a vehicle includes a casing containing an input shaft and an output shaft. A planetary transmission is disposed within the casing and is co-axially mounted around the input shaft. The planetary powershift unit includes a sun gear and an annulus gear interconnected by one or more planet gears carded on a planet carder. A first one of the sun gear, the annulus gear, and the planet carder is connected to the input shaft, while a second one of the sun gear, the annulus gear, and the planet carder acts as an output member of the planetary powershift unit. A first clutch is disposed within the casing and co-axially surrounds the output shaft for drivingly connecting the output member of the planetary powershift unit with the output shaft.
