  • Patent number: 6669588
Abstract: A continuously variable transmission including two pairs of conical disks of which one disk of each pair is axially movable toward and away from the other disk and having an endless loop member in the form of a belt that passes around each pair of disks and transfers torque between the pairs of disks. The axially movable conical disk includes a contact pressure chamber to move the disk axially by the application of hydraulic pressure. The movable disk also includes an integrated torque sensor that is operative for controlling the contact pressure between the disks of a pair of disks and the endless loop member as a function of the torque.

Abstract: A clamp pressure controller for a variable ratio belt drive system for a generator is provided. The controller monitors the voltage at the output of the generator. If this falls the controller increases the clamp pressure so as to prepare the drive system for the additional torque/force it will be required to transmit. The increase in clamp pressure is rapid so as to prevent belt slip from occurring.

  • Patent number: 5871411
Abstract: For an electro-hydraulically actuable continuously variable belt transmission, the selected contact pressure at the movable conical pulley discs must be of such a magnitude that the chain, the force transmitting belt or the like does not slip. On the other hand, the contact pressure should not be too great for a high efficiency of the transmission to be achieved at every operating point. The invention reliably prevents slippage of the belt (chain, force transmitting belt or the like) by controlling the belt slip. The mean contact pressure is thereby reduced. As a result, there is a decrease in the mechanical and hydraulic losses at the transmission. A variant of the invention includes an embodiment of a rotational-speed sensor which makes it simultaneously possible to measure the axial position of the pulley disc(s). As a result, there is a reduction in the additional complexity required for slip control compared to the belt-tension control.

  • Patent number: 5762576
Abstract: A hydraulic control apparatus for a continuously variable transmission includes an inhibit valve that blocks the supply of hydraulic pressure to a reverse-drive brake during forward movement, and an inhibit solenoid valve that relieves the hydraulic pressure in a fluid passage acting on a spool of the inhibit valve so as to move the spool to the closed side and also relieves the hydraulic pressure in another fluid passage acting on a high-pressure regulator valve to urge the same to the low-pressure side, thereby increasing the high fluid pressure. This arrangement is able to improve the transient response of the control apparatus without providing additional pressure control valves as done in the conventional apparatus. The control apparatus can be manufactured with reduced number of components and at a relatively low cost.

  • Patent number: 5186291
Abstract: A transmission for a vehicle comprises a mechanical stepped gearbox (6) in front of which a hydraulic torque converter (5) is arranged. The torque converter (5) comprises a turbine wheel (19) which is connected to a turbine shaft (21). An input shaft (25) of the gearbox (6) is connected in a drive power-transmitting manner to the turbine shaft (21). In addition, a brake (34) is connected to the turbine shaft (21) or the input shaft (25), in which respect, on starting-up, the input shaft (25) can be stopped in order to permit engagement of a starting gear without the need to produce drive power interruption by means of a conventional clutch. The brake (34) is also used when changing-up for synchronization of the gearbox (6) together with an electrical control unit (32) for engine regulation. This allows the gear-changing in a mechanical, unsynchronized stepped gearbox to be carried out in a simple manner.

Abstract: In an automatic transmission incorporating a planetary gear transmission at a rear stage of a four-element torque converter comprising two stators, a turbine and a pump; a planetary gear train of an automatic transmission, wherein a reversal torque of a first stator reversing in a low speed ratio zone is converted into a normal torque by the planetary gear train so that this output from the first stator can be added to an output shaft, when a first speed of the planetary gear transmission is selected; a friction element is provided for limiting a rotation of the first stator in the speed ratio zone where the first stator rotates in the reverse direction, a one-way clutch for transmitting a torque only in a specified direction is installed, and the first stator is permitted to run idle by this one-way clutch so that a fluid loss in a stator portion can be minimized, when a second speed of the planetary gear transmission is selected.
