  • Patent number: 10718417
Abstract: A torque converter for a vehicle includes an impeller, a turbine, a stator positioned between the impeller and the turbine, a one-way clutch coupled to the stator and configured to couple to a fixed member, and a controllable clutch assembly. The controllable clutch assembly is configured to selectively engage the stator and the turbine such that the stator is able to rotate with the turbine to facilitate preventing the stator from reacting against the one-way clutch and applying a load to the fixed member and thereby facilitating reducing an output of the torque converter and reducing engine vibration during idle, and disengage the stator from the turbine to enable relative rotation between the stator and turbine.

  • Patent number: 9541182
Abstract: A drive device for a vehicle having a combustion engine and a multistage manual transmission having first and second sub-transmissions, each of which has a separate input shaft. A first input shaft of the first sub-transmission couples, via a first clutch, the combustion engine or is assigned an electrical machine. A second input shaft of a second sub-transmission couples, via a second clutch, the combustion engine. The first input shaft is additionally assigned a start-up element having at least one hydrodynamic transfer element, which has first and second functional wheels which together form a working chamber. The working chamber can be filled with fluid in order to generate a hydrodynamic transfer torque such that at least one start-up function, affecting the first sub-transmission, can carried out by way of the start-up element.

  • Patent number: 5946984
Abstract: An apparatus for gear shifting control with improved shift quality during gear shifting includes a gearbox unit containing at least one gear branch for power transfer via a hydrodynamic clutch. The hydrodynamic clutch can be coupled in series with a mechanical gearing part containing a device for realizing at least two speeds. In the course of power transfer via the hydrodynamic clutch during a gear shift operation between two mechanical speeds, the fill factor of the hydrodynamic clutch is so altered that a variable which at least indirectly characterizes the rotational speed of the primary bucket wheel of the hydrodynamic clutch is held substantially constant over a certain range of the gear shift operation.

  • Patent number: 5030179
Abstract: A manually-shifted transmission for use in passenger cars and trucks includes a number of constantly-meshed pairs of gears for coupling one shaft to another through a dog clutch on the power output gear of each gear pair. Also included in this basic configuration of the invention are a motorcycle-style shift drum which controls engagement of the dog clutches, a sprag clutch on the power input side of the gear pairs and a wet, multi-disc clutch on the power output side. Since the multi-disc clutch is disengaged for gearshifting, the total gearshift load accelerated or decelerated by the dog clutches is very low and includes none of the gear pairs. The resulting very rapid change from engagement of one gear pair to engagement of another, in conjuction with automatic engagement and disengagement action of the sprag clutch, allows full-power downshifting of the transmission.

  • Patent number: 4964843
Abstract: In a power-transmission unit for variable-speed drive of machinery with hydro-dynamic speed-superposition of a differential gear a second torque converter is provided as a braking device. This increases the effectiveness of the unit by feedback of the superposed output onto the drive side. Particularly advantageous is the use of an oppposed-motion converter as brake converter for certain operating conditions or the combination of a with-motion converter and an opposed-motion converter in the unit. Furthermore, this makes an extension of the speed control range possible.
