  • Patent number: 6253140
Abstract: An adaptive control system and method for direct clutch engagement control for an automatic transmission including a micro-controller that receives and stores input data from driveline sensors and executes transmission clutch control logic. The micro-controller develops output signals in real time and transfers the signals to a driver circuit that controls solenoids that enable clutch engagement. The signals for establishing clutch pressure buildup are delivered to a driver circuit that produces hydraulic pressure at the clutch to achieve a smooth torque and speed transition for the torque input elements of the transmission. Adaptive pressure values are stored in a keep-alive memory. The pressure values are adjusted values based on the result of previous engagements. This compensates for driveline variables such as changes in coefficients of friction, spring loads, clutch wear, etc.

  • Patent number: 6213916
Abstract: An apparatus and method for controlling the engagement rate of a clutch in a partially or fully automated mechanical transmission in response to an indication provided by the driver, such as the depression of an accelerator pedal of the vehicle. The apparatus includes an electronic controller which initially sets a desired speed for the vehicle engine during the shifting process, determines a rate of engagement movement of a release bearing of the clutch, and actuates appropriate valves to initiate the gradual engagement of the clutch. The electronic controller is responsive to the position of the accelerator pedal of the vehicle for adjusting the rate of engagement of the release bearing of the clutch. In a first embodiment, the electronic controller is responsive to movement of the accelerator pedal in a first direction (depressed for further acceleration) for incrementing the rate of engagement of the release bearing.

  • Patent number: 6036619
Abstract: A controller of an automatic transmission having a lockup clutch and a control method of the automatic transmission, in which engine rotational speed is prevented from changing even though turbine rotational speed changes at gear shift and slip control can be carried out without making a driver feel uncomfortable are provided. When a speed change command is detected and it is determined that an inertia phase has not yet started, target engine rotational speed during a replenish period is calculated and the target engine rotational speed control is carried out to have the target engine rotational speed. When it is determined that the control is in the inertia phase, another target engine rotational speed during the inertia phase is calculated. Then, target engine rotational speed control in which the engine rotational speed at the start of the inertia phase is maintained as the target engine rotational speed is carried out.

  • Patent number: 5890994
Abstract: An output torque control system for an internal combustion engine for a vehicle is operable during an upshift of an automatic transmission of the engine to increase the output torque from the engine, based on a control amount for increasing the output torque, to reduce a shock generated by the upshift. During the upshift of the automatic transmission, a slip amount of one of a plurality of clutches of the automatic transmission which is selected for the upshift is compared with a predetermined value. A calculation is made of a value of the control amount assumed when the slip amount of the one clutch becomes equal to the predetermined value, as a result of the comparison. The control amount is limited to the calculated value when the slip amount exceeds the predetermined value, as a result of the comparison.

  • Patent number: 5810691
Abstract: The invention relates to a hydraulic changing device for a multi-ratio vehicle transmission, especially for a commercial vehicle such as a mobile excavator. The hydraulic changing device feeds gear actuator (3, 4) with pressure medium conveyed by a servopump (10). There is a control slide (26) which is acted upon by the effect of a control spring (33), on the one hand, and by a pressure in a low-pressure chamber (23), on the other. The low-pressure chamber (23) is coupled to a low-pressure pump (20) operating in dependence upon the engine speed. The arrangement is completed by a shuttle valve (6) and a leakage valve (5). The pressure prevailing in the low-pressure chamber (23) actuates the control slide (26), against the force of the control spring (23), in such a way that undesired changes from a higher to a lower gear are prevented. The hydraulic changing device, of the invention, is advantageously distinguished by its low structural and design expenditures.

  • Patent number: 5779592
Abstract: An operator input control system assists shifting between gears in a multi-speed transmission without clutching. A single switch allows an operator to provide an indication of the next gear that is to be selected, and further allows the operator the option of requesting torque elimination when moving the transmission to neutral. In one embodiment, the switch includes a rotatable switch body that is held in either an upshift or downshift intent position. The operator is able to move the switch a slight additional rotational amount beyond the intent position to request torque elimination. Once the operator releases the switch, it returns to the upshift or downshift indicated position. The inventive switch reduces the complexity of operator input in an overall system for assisting an operator in shifting transmission speeds without clutching.
