Abstract: A facial muscle and mouth exerciser for maintaining the health, appearance, and flexibility of the facial and mouth muscles, and useful as a therapeutic device to prevent disfigurement of damaged tissues that may result from burns or cuts about the face and mouth, formed of two similar, all plastic molded components arranged in reciprocal sliding relationship for relative movement between an extended and retracted position whereby the relative movement of the components is normally biased toward the extended position and resisted toward the retracted position by an elastic band or spring resistant member.

Abstract: A compact jaw muscle exercise device that people use to strengthen and tone jaw muscles which includes a generally wedged shape body of plastic having upper and lower surfaces adapted to engage one's teeth. Holes run transversely through the body, which increases the deformability of the exercise device. The exercise device's resistance may be increased by inserting cylindrical members through the holes.

Abstract: A translator apparatus for achieving omnidirectional translation of the mandible of a human patient and having a maxillary translation plate having a maxillary mouthpiece thereon for temporarily fixing the maxillary dentition of a patient thereto. A mandibular translation plate is provided, also having a mandibular mouthpiece for temporary fixation with the mandibular dentition of the patient and the mandibular element. A translation control plate is interposed between the maxillary and mandibular translation plates and establishes linearly moveable guiding relation with elongate guide slots of both the maxillary and mandibular plates. The guide slots of the respective translation plates which may be straight or of curved configuration are arranged in 90 degree relation to permit relative omnidirectional translatory positioning and movement of the translation plates for consequent selective omnidirectional therapeutic or diagnostic positioning or movement of the mandible of a patient.

Abstract: A temporomandibular rehabilitator having (a) a lower planar member having a longitudinal center, first and second ends, and a segment connecting the first and second ends to one another; and (b) an upper angular member having first and second ends, and first and second planar faces having an obtuse interior angle between the faces. The angular member is pivotally connected at the vertex of the obtuse interior angle to the segment of the planar member which connects the first and second ends of the planar member to one another, so that the first planar face of the angular member can be brought into parallel contact with the first end and with a first portion of the segment connecting the first and second ends of the planar member to one another, or the second planar face of the angular member can be brought into parallel contact with the second end and with a second portion of the segment connecting the first and second ends of the planar member to one another.

Abstract: A method and device for developing the ability to demonstrate graded jaw closure and repetitive, rhythmical mandibular movement over an improved range of motion in those suffering from limiting oral motor dysfunction. The method begins with providing an embodiment of the inventive device. Essentially, the inventive device may be comprised of a non-nutritive, non-toxic and elongated biting portion comprised of a yieldable and resilient tube which has a given effective lateral thickness and is adapted to be received between an upper and a lower biting surface of an orally dysfunctional person's mouth and a handle position securely connected to the biting position for enabling manipulation of the device from a position external to a user's mouth. Next, the orally dysfunctional person is instructed and, if necessary, assisted in holding the biting position of the device between the person's biting surfaces for progressively greater length's of time.

Abstract: The invention is a facial mask, that when applied to the skin as a liquid latex formulation, will dry to a rubberized consistency creating a resistance to facial muscle movement similar to the resistance bands used in home exercise machines. This resistance is increased by adding additional layers of the mask. Once exercises are complete, the mask is removed by simply peeling it from the skin, leaving the skin feeling soft and muscles of the face feeling firm and taut.

Abstract: A muscle exerciser for exercising facial muscles, comprising an elongated handle having a pair of arms diverging from the handle. The handle and arms comprise a rigid assembly that lies in one plane. A body of highly compressible resilient material is mounted one on the end of each arm remote from the handle. There is a pivot on the end of each arm. Each body of highly compressible resilient material is mounted on the pivot for swinging movement on the end of its associated arm relative to the handle about an axis perpendicular to that plane.

Abstract: An exerciser device of the present invention is disposed in the mouth for exercising in the mouth through the use of tension. The exerciser device of the present invention includes a guard strip for passing over the front and sides of the upper and lower teeth. A grip piece extending form an inside of the guard strip is used for gripping and holding the guard strip in position during use. Preferably, the guard strip comprises a pair of tabs separated from each other such that the upper and lower teeth are separated from each other to avoid discomfort caused by the upper and lower teeth being clenched.

Abstract: A jaw and neck muscle exercise apparatus which includes a spring loaded support arm attached to a soft chin support on one end and to a chest plate on the other end. The chest plate is strapped around the chest bone/collar bone area and the back of the neck by a collar strap. The lower jaw may then be exercised by opening the mouth or lowering the entire head against the resistance of the spring. The resistance is selected to be proper for the size and strength of the user and the progress of the exercise program to date. Proper use of this device will cause the muscles of the face, chin and neck to become toned and conditioned, eliminating fatness below the chin and wrinkles, particularly exercising the hyoid, the infrahyoid and digastric muscles.

Abstract: There is disclosed an exercise device for exercising the facial muscles of a user. The device includes a first elastic strap for encircling the face of a user. The elastic strap is secured in position over the forehead and under the chin by a plurality of additional straps. One of the straps of the device, when in use, is positioned beneath the ears for maintaining stability of the elastic strap and preventing lateral movement of the jaw during use.

Abstract: A facial muscle exercise device includes a mouthpiece which fits into the mouth over the lower jaw and teeth, which mouthpiece is connected via an elastic member to a handle which is pressed down by the user to create tension against the lower jaw. The lower jaw may then be exercised by up and down motion or thrusting forward and back or from side to side. Proper use of this device will cause the muscles in the face, chin and neck to become toned and conditioned, eliminating fatness below the chin and wrinkles.

Abstract: An apparatus for exercising the muscles surrounding the cervical spine of a person, comprising: a belt adapted to be secured about the waist of a person, and including frontal and posterior portions; a pair of suspenders connecting at their frontal ends to opposing frontal portions of the belt, extending over opposing shoulders of the person, and connecting at their posterior ends to opposing posterior portions of the belt; a chin cup adapted to fit around the person's chin; a head band adapted to fit around the person's head and including frontal and posterior portions; a first elastic strap adapted to provide a tensile load between the chin cup and the frontal portion of the belt; and a plurality of elastic straps adapted to provide tensile loads between the frontal portion of the head band, across the person's head, and the posterior portion of the belt or suspenders.

Abstract: A complemental series of handheld, tactile devices in kit form to assist in behavioral modification training techniques as well as utilizing the techiques of "resisted movement" and "successive approximation". Each positioner device is handheld, with one portion protruding from the lips and the other portion loosely fitting on the patient's hard plate. Different shapes are introduced to the tongue and lips on each respective device. A commonalty within the interdependent positioner devices is presented by an elongated palatal base defining a convex upper surface to engage the palate, a manipulable handle projecting from the base and the respective devices are further characterized in configuration.

Abstract: An apparatus for exercise of the temporomandibular joint. The apparatus consists of a maxillary mold attachment means pivotally attached to pins which are inserted to a stationary portion of an actuation device, and a mandibular mold attachment means pivotally attached to pins which are inserted to the traveling portion of an actuation device. The actuation device provides vertical motion to exercise the joint. The attachment means includes extension means including a hollow cylinder and a piston to accommodate the required horizontal displacement of the jaw during opening and closing, the pivot means to accommodate the curvelinear motion of the jaw when opening and closing. A method of therapy using the disclosed device provides improved bite gap for patients undergoing TMJ surgery.
